About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Community Recreation Planner for the Canada Summer Jobs program. This role involves enforcing rules and regulations of recreational facilities to maintain discipline and ensure safety. The incumbent will be responsible for organizing, leading, and promoting interest in recreational activities such as arts, crafts, sports, games, and hobbies. The position also includes managing daily operations of recreational facilities, administering first aid, and engaging with clients and community members to foster positive relationships and a supportive environment. This role requires adherence to The Salvation Army's values and philosophy, participation in staff meetings and training, and maintaining a working knowledge of policies and procedures. The planner will also be responsible for managing attendance, inputting program statistics, and acting as a positive role model for participants.

Requirements

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of, and a commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, written and oral communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and individually.
  • Must be caring and non-judgemental of clients-regardless of their level of ability or commitment.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check.
  • Provide a vulnerable sector check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army at its sole discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce rules and regulations of recreational facilities to maintain discipline and ensure safety.
  • Organize, lead, and promote interest in recreational activities such as arts, crafts, sports, games, and hobbies.
  • Manage the daily operations of recreational facilities.
  • Administer first aid according to prescribed procedures and notify emergency medical personnel when necessary.
  • Greet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other participants, explaining facility rules, and encouraging their participation.
  • Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in recreational activities, and demonstrate use of materials and equipment.
  • Evaluate recreation areas, facilities, and services to determine if they are producing desired results.
  • Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet participant needs.
  • Engage in rapport-building conversations and activities with clients where applicable.
  • Manage regular sign-in/attendance sheets and database.
  • Fulfill statistics inputting in program tracking database regularly, as necessary.
  • Ensure that Health and Safety standards are met or surpassed in all operations.
  • Attend regular supervision meetings.
  • Perform program statistics as assigned.
  • Act as an advocate and be a positive role model for residential client participants as well as youth in the community.
  • Develop effective working relationships and partnerships with community members, representatives of other departments, agencies and co-workers.
  • Maintain documentation and filing and other administration duties as required.
  • Represent the Salvation Army and this project at community meetings.
  • Perform any other related duties as requested by supervisor.
  • Maintain list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes.
  • Support external reporting requests as needed.
