About The Position

Under general supervision, this full-time position designs, organizes, implements, and evaluates a variety of recreation and social service programs, activities, and special events for all age groups. This role requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, and involves maintaining supervisory responsibilities for part-time staff. The position will be assigned to assist with the Montclair to College program, contract classes, and a variety of other community programs.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of principles of municipal recreation programs and municipal government organizations and functions.
  • Knowledge of leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of equipment and supplies used for recreational activities.
  • Knowledge of recreational, cultural, and social needs in the community.
  • Knowledge of procedures for planning, implementing, and maintaining a variety of recreation, human services activities.
  • Knowledge of computers programs including Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of working with the public, community based agencies, and schools.
  • Ability to develop programs and services in accordance with community needs and for all ages.
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to make program presentations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with all participants, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to be an effective team player.
  • Ability to elicit community and organization support for programs.
  • Ability to prepare and distribute publicity concerning new and on-going recreation programs and activities.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate part-time personnel.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license and proof of insurance required.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification required within 60 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to fluently read, write, and speak in Spanish is desirable.
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent and an Associate degree or equivalent in college units, i.e., 90 quarter or 60 semester units or four years experience working with the public in the recreation, social service, or a related field is preferred.
  • Related experience and/or training in planning, organizing activities, community work, work with senior and/or youth, and supervisorial responsibilities is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, organizing, and implementing special events, recreational, sports, social, and educational activities and programs held at various schools and City facilities.
  • May be responsible for volunteer, youth, sports or senior citizen programming.
  • Reviewing program and budget expenditures.
  • Assisting in developing budgets.
  • Researching and preparing specific justifications.
  • Evaluating program attendance, participant responses and cost, and making recommendations regarding the continuance of programs.
  • Creating new programs.
  • Participating in long-term planning to assess future recreation needs.
  • Preparing written and oral reports.
  • Maintaining records and developing reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness.
  • Preparing statistical reports as required.
  • Assisting with grant research and writing, implementation, fund raising and sponsorship development activities.
  • Directing, supervising, and evaluating part-time staff.
  • Coordinating activities and resources of community groups.
  • Maintaining prompt and regular attendance.
  • Serving as Department representative with external organizations.
  • Attending and/or speaking at meetings, community and professional functions, and conferences as assigned.
  • Coordinating with stakeholder organizations.
  • Acting as a resource to parents and students.
  • Facilitating workshops.
  • Coordinating and promoting events and activities.
  • Tracking objectives, outputs and outcomes.
  • Creating a positive environment for youth.
  • Helping to implement grant deliverables.
  • Researching the needs and wants of the community.
  • Identifying trends in contract classes.
  • Recruiting new instructors.
  • Scheduling classes.
  • Coordinating with current instructors.
  • Coordinating the tri-annual Human Services Brochure.
