About The Position

A Recreation Center Director II plans, coordinates and directs a recreation program in a one story, multi-room center having a gym and multi-purpose room, satellite center and/or a pool. Work of this class involves supervising full-time and part-time recreation leaders and aides. Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional work week which includes evening and weekend hours. Work is performed in a recreation center where unpleasant working conditions are rarely encountered. Work requires moderate physical exertion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, recreation administration, communication, leisure services or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Four years’ experience managing a recreation facility or program.
  • Must hold or be able to acquire within one (1) year of hire and maintain a Certified Pool Operator Certification and First Aid/CPR Certification.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation program development.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of a wide variety of sports, games and recreational activities.
  • Knowledge of the use and care of recreational equipment.
  • Ability to plan, organize, direct and evaluate a recreational program.
  • Ability to lead a variety of recreational activities.
  • Supervisory ability.
  • Ability to establish a satisfactory relationship with the community.
  • Ability to work effectively with large groups of people.
  • Authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed for positions identified as positions of trust.
  • Completion of a mandatory six-month probation.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in recreation, physical education, recreation administration, communication, leisure services or a related field from an accredited university may be substituted for six months of the experience requirement.
