This position performs duties related to the coordination of recreation facilities and the development of program opportunities for a targeted park-school community. This position is responsible for the appearance, maintenance, safety and efficient operation of assigned park/school facilities. The recreation coordinator serves as a liaison for third party and community organizations for the purpose of space reservation and facility coordination. Requirements

  • Associate's degree in parks and recreation management, sports management, natural resources, or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in parks and recreation operations, facility coordination or program support
  • Current certifications in Community First Aid, CPR, and AED or ability to obtain these certifications within 30 days of hire
  • Knowledge of recreation facility safety/maintenance, and risk management practices
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices, of recreation a multitude of sports and recreational activities
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn, the Division/Department software applications
  • Skill in coordinating and overseeing scheduling
  • Skill to oversee program development and lesson plan creation
  • Skill in instruction techniques
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, participants, customers, and the public
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and implement recreation programs; lead group recreation & sports; and teach skill-based activities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, customer driven, active recreation/sports environment
  • Ability to work in a recreational/sports venue setting with frequent verbal interaction with coworkers and customers
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with customers, co-workers, school personnel, and the general public
  • Ability to review directives, prioritize tasks, and respond to customer inquiries
  • Compile, maintain, and prepare various data and reports
  • Ability to effectively supervise, assign and direct the work of subordinate support staff
  • Ability to effectively evaluate emergencies and unexpected situations and promptly respond in an appropriate manner
  • Effective spoken and written communication skills including the ability to produce materials for publication, to speak before community groups, to accurately perform clerical and record-keeping duties, and to explain regulations to user groups

Responsibilities

  • Facilitating safe and efficient operation of a variety of recreation programs and services
  • Creation and development of recreational programs
  • Actively leading groups of students in recreation classes
  • Coordination with user groups, contractors, part-time staff and volunteers
  • Maintenance of records and reports
  • Inventory and upkeep of materials and equipment
  • Supervision is given to part-time recreational staff
  • Ensure efficient day-to-day operation of a recreation center by coordinating recreation programs, group rentals, part-time support staff, and by providing direction to patrons
  • Produce and oversee county recreation programming including budgeting, lesson planning, supply purchasing, instruction, and incorporating community input on program preferences
  • Work directly with the Division's Personnel Specialist to recruit, select, and train part-time support staff
  • Coordinate support staff work scheduling based on facility calendar and program needs
  • Lead various recreational activities after school dismissal and on weekends
  • Monitor facility schedules and provide recommendations to insert departmental programs in specific locations
  • Perform public relation duties; work with community members in addressing their concerns, inquiries and suggestions
  • Serve as a liaison to the local community by actively meeting with Recreation Councils, various school administrative personnel, the local sports organization community and collaborating agencies
  • Develop partnerships to achieve mutually beneficial goals and enhance community opportunities
  • Assist in promotion of all recreation center activities in order to maximize community knowledge and involvement
  • Assist in developing and implementing safety protocols that are in compliance with Division and Frederick County Public School (FCPS) policies
  • Provide on-call assistance for evening, weekend, and holiday facility operations
  • Ensure that facilities are organized, properly set-up, and prepared for daily scheduled activities
  • Ensure all equipment is safe
  • Respond to customer inquiries and concerns promptly and appropriately
  • Perform custodial duties and maintain cleanliness of facility
  • Supervise, lead, and evaluate various recreational activities
  • Ensure that participants conform to established standards of conduct for activities and facilities
  • Perform routine maintenance to equipment and amenities
  • Perform snow removal duties and assist during inclement weather conditions
  • Perform other related duties as required
