About The Position

This position is generated due to an increase in student participation. It is for the current season only. Any coaches hired due to student/coach ratios must reapply each year as positions become available. Pay is based off current year Assistant Coach Salary schedule. High school assistant coaches work in concert with the assistant coach to ensure the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development to include expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships. Per WIAA requirements, you must be at least 19 years of age to apply for any assistant coaching positions and 21 years of age to apply for any head coaching positions.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent
Prior sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary and/or post-secondary athletics program and/or related club coaching experience.
Proven training and experience in the presentation of drills, safety factors, and proper application of skills.
Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis
Must be at least 19 years of age
Criminal background clearance
First Aid and CPR certification (must be hands-on training)
Online Concussion Training (CT)

Nice To Haves

Two or more years of paid high school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience and/or related club coaching experience.
Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course to include passing the test.

Responsibilities

Keep abreast of knowledge and techniques associated with his/her sport by staying current with sport-specific literature and attending clinics and workshops.
Study the rules and regulations associated with his/her sport, including those of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), Federal Way Public Schools, and the league in which his/her team competes.
Promote his/her sport within the school and in the community. Report scores and contest-related information to designated media and the league website immediately following each contest.
Attend practices and contests on a daily basis. Absences from practice should be rare and for illness and/or personal emergency cleared in advance with the building athletic director.
Implement a system of play and/or style of instruction as directed by the head coach.
Model safety training relative to his/her sport as demonstrated and directed by the head coach. Have a working knowledge of basic athletic training skills and procedures, including basic taping and first aid functions.
Exercise good judgment and project positive coaching behaviors. Assume a major role in the molding of student athletes in his/her program and the school/community at large. Teach and develop basic skills fundamentals, leadership characteristics, and cooperative, team-oriented behavior. Maintain an even keel, calm, and positive approach. Be contemplative and fair-minded.
Serve as an example of sportsmanship and humility at all times. Handle obstacles or losses with grace, dignity, and pride. Model and insist upon ethical behavior and good citizenship at all times.
Be responsible for participants from the time they report until the time they leave.
Thoroughly understand and reinforce eligibility requirements, participation rules, and the District Eligibility Code as demonstrated and directed by the head coach.
Ensure that team members have completed the eligibility process before allowing participation in any form of practice activity.
Call 911 without hesitation for serious and/or difficult to assess injuries. Fill out and submit an Accident Report Form to the building athletic director within 24 hours of a student or staff member being injured. Immediately report emergency situations to the building athletic director and director of athletics.
Report scores promptly and accurately to local news media and the league website immediately following the event as directed.
Attend building, district, league, and rules clinic meetings as scheduled and as required by Federal Way Public Schools.
Work with the head coach to plan and implement a post-season gathering that includes participants from all levels of the program and parents/guardians.
Immediately report safety concerns to the head coach and assume responsibility for the care of equipment and facilities used in the program.
Report a violation and/or ejection to the head coach, building athletic director, and director of athletics immediately following the contest where the infraction occurred.
Attend an evaluation meeting with the building athletic director following the season.
Meet regularly with the head coach to discuss program goals and ensure consistent presentation and implementation of skills, systems, and strategies at all levels.
Be responsible for his/her program’s equipment and supplies and account for all program-related items checked out to him/her at the start of the season.
Request essential program needs through the head coach and not purchase program items with personal funds.
Work through the head coach to discuss potential fundraising activities and not raise or handle funds without advance approval from the building athletic director.
Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit and supporting student learning objectives.
