About The Position

The Range Safety Officer (RSO) monitors the firearms range and training facility when used by the general public and provides facility access and support to customers. RSO’s should have extensive knowledge about the operation of firearms of all types and may be called upon to offer assistance for shooters using the lanes. An RSO’s primary duty is to organize, conduct and supervise safe shooting activities and range operations for all shooters at all times. The Range Officer will provide range orientation for new members and by-the-hour walk-in shooters. The RSO will ensure that the entire facility and all operations are maintained at the highest standards. Applications will be reviewed as they are submitted.

Requirements

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years’ experience as a firearms instructor or a range safety officer with a gun range or gun club.
  • NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) Certification or USCCA RSO certification or any other RSO certification recognized as a reputable certification program or previous experience as a law enforcement firearms instructor or willing to obtain certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Excellent communication, grammar, and spelling skills.
  • Confidence in computer functionality and range computer software programs.
  • Proficient with handguns, rifles, and shotguns.
  • Must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm under Minnesota Statute(s) 624.713 and/or 624.714.
  • Able to wear respirator and personal protective equipment (PPE) for changing range filters, brass and lead removal.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years’ experience as a firearms instructor in a law enforcement or military agency; or five (5) years’ experience as a licensed police officer or military service member.
  • NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) Certification or USCCA RSO certification or any other RSO certification recognized as a reputable certification program not listed.
  • Ability to use various types of computer software programs including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook (email/calendar).
  • Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to use computer programs for range equipment functionality.
  • Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion in a timely manner.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and be organized.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, City employees and the public.
  • Ability to work around an indoor shooting range environment with various training spaces that involve police, fire, and EMS related trainings.
  • Assist with public access training courses such as youth firearms training and related firearms safety training courses.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety and firing procedures are followed while in the firing range.
  • Make range assignments and explain safety compliance procedures.
  • Conduct inspections of range equipment prior to use.
  • Clean up, address any issues and document any damage to the range equipment, inclusive of cleaning up the brass and related debris when shooting events conclude.
  • Clean the range as directed after shooting events.
  • Ensure all firearms are cased properly until on the range floor.
  • Ensure all posted range rules are followed by users.
  • Ensure ammunition checks for correct ammunition.
  • Ensure all safety through inspection of eye and ear protection.
  • Address safety violations and remove persons from the firing line.
  • Implement emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Order immediate cease-fire when any unsafe condition occurs.
  • Record lane usage by participants with in and out times.
  • Maintain rules and safety of lane operations.
  • Ensure that range is clear of all unauthorized or underage personnel.
  • Ensure that access doors are closed when the firing range is live.
  • Make sure that all emergency communications are working.
  • Troubleshoot the training system, range equipment and lighting.
  • Assist customers with appropriate lane and target operation.
  • Complete range incident reports as required.
  • Be physically present on the range at all times that the range is live.
  • Occasionally act as key holder for public safety agencies renting the facility outside of the public shoot times.
  • Refill sanitary supplies as necessary and maintain a clean facility.
  • Attend training as required by the HERO Center Manager.
  • Handle point of sale (POS) and lane reservations as required.
  • Use respirator/mask and wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for replacing range filters and emptying of lead from range bucket collection system.
  • Other duties as assigned.
