About The Position

A well-established, family-run cattle operation in the Nebraska Sandhills is hiring a Ranch Hand to play a key role in the day-to-day operations. This role is based at a separate ranch location and is responsible for managing calves and yearlings, feeding, and maintaining overall herd health. This is a highly independent role best suited for someone who takes pride in their work, can manage responsibilities without supervision, and values being part of a long-term operation.

Requirements

  • Prior ranch experience required
  • Strong understanding of cattle health and ability to identify issues early
  • Ability to work independently and manage daily responsibilities without supervision
  • Experience feeding cattle and operating basic ranch equipment
  • Comfortable working with livestock in both pasture and lot settings
  • Ability to operate truck and trailer (clean driving record preferred)
  • Basic equipment maintenance skills
  • Honest, dependable, and accountable
  • Strong work ethic with attention to detail
  • Willingness to work within a multi-generation family operation

Responsibilities

  • Manage calves from weaning through turnout, including daily health monitoring and treatment
  • Feed cattle using a pickup and welker caker and a bale processor
  • Maintain feeding schedules and ensure consistency in cattle performance
  • Monitor and manage cattle health in both pasture and lot settings
  • Process and doctor cattle as needed (pens available for handling)
  • Assist with preg checking and general herd work
  • Care for fall heifers and bulls, including feeding and monitoring
  • Move cattle between locations using horseback, ATV, or truck and trailer
  • Assist with sorting, shipping, and preparing cattle for sale
  • Support calving season as needed with the main crew
  • Participate in branding (table system) and other processing events
  • Perform fence building, repair, and general ranch maintenance
  • Maintain and operate equipment (feeding equipment, tractors, hay equipment)
  • Assist with hay production including mowing, raking, baling, and moving bales
  • Check and maintain windmills, water systems, mineral, and salt
  • Monitor pasture conditions and overall livestock performance
  • Identify and complete tasks without being told; take initiative in daily work
