RAM Lead Engineer

Anduril•Costa Mesa, CA
•$166,000 - $220,000

About The Position

Anduril’s Maritime Division is developing maritime autonomous vehicles and scaling manufacturing through its Proto-Factory in Orange County, California, and the planned Arsenal-2 shipyard in Baltimore County, Maryland. The RAM Lead Engineer owns reliability, availability, and maintainability across a fleet of maritime autonomous vehicles, from concept and detailed design through manufacturing scale-up, production, and field performance. The role reports to the Support System Lead and sets RAM requirements, performs predictive analyses to assess whether requirements are achievable, and drives design changes to close gaps. This hands-on, collaborative position works with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, as well as manufacturing, quality, test operations, maintenance, and field service. The engineer establishes reliability processes and infrastructure, develops and verifies RAM requirements and models, plans and executes tests, investigates failures, and uses results to improve designs and production processes. The role also leads and mentors engineers as the RAM function grows.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience in reliability, RAM, sustainment, design/development, process, automation, industrial, or test engineering; the posting also specifies 7+ years in reliability, RAM, or sustainment engineering on complex electromechanical systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or an equivalent technical discipline.
  • Experience with safety-critical hardware and software systems in the defense or aerospace industry.
  • Experience setting up a reliability engineering framework for a product or program, including production and field testing, data acquisition, and data analysis.
  • Expertise in reliability analysis techniques, including FMEA/FMECA, predictive modeling, Weibull analysis, and fault tree analysis.
  • Demonstrated ownership of RAM requirements and predictions on a program, and ability to drive reliability requirements into a design organization.
  • Hands-on experience with reliability modeling and FRACAS, including closing the loop on failure data.
  • Experience generating qualification testing requirements and executing tests to characterize product behavior and performance.
  • Failure investigation and analysis experience with a demonstrated record of solving problems and preventing recurrence.
  • Experience with design reviews such as PDR, CDR, and MRR, and confidence presenting to leadership at all levels.
  • Experience or familiarity with MIL-STD-810, MIL-HDBK-217, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-516C, and MIL-STD-1629.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or an equivalent technical discipline.
  • Experience with MIL-HDBK-217Plus, MIL-HDBK-472, and MIL-STD-1916.
  • Experience with Manufacturing Readiness Level assessments, Manufacturing Review Board, quality inspection, tooling, or calibration.
  • Experience with risk management, change control or change-management reviews, and software/firmware HITL/SITL.
  • Experience with HALT, HASS, environmental testing, and/or mechanical testing.
  • Technical writing experience developing requirements, standards, specifications, user guides, and policies.
  • Experience with unmanned, autonomous, or unattended systems where intervention is not possible.
  • Background in maritime, subsea, or naval sustainment; the posting also expresses a preference for autonomous underwater vehicle experience.
  • Familiarity with Level of Repair Analysis, maintainability modeling, and spares optimization.
  • Experience with reliability growth programs and test-analyze-fix campaigns.
  • Defense program experience with formal RAM contractual requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Review system block diagrams, interface control documents, and schematics for compliance, redundancy, accuracy, and alignment with requirements and concept of operations.
  • Own RAM requirements definition, allocation, and verification across the vehicle and support system.
  • Perform predictive reliability, availability, and maintainability analyses and build and maintain reliability models and fleet availability analyses.
  • Lead FMEA/FMECA, fault tree analysis, and criticality assessments with cross-functional engineering teams, and drive resulting design improvements.
  • Calculate probability of loss of control, probability of loss of asset, and MTTF/MTBF using program requirements, specifications, and relevant standards.
  • Develop and execute qualification and validation test plans, including environmental, life/limit, and accelerated testing; partner with Test Engineering to fixture and instrument test campaigns.
  • Work with Quality and Manufacturing Engineering to develop and validate assembly, integration, inspection, acceptance-test, and testing processes that improve build reliability and reduce time to deployment.
  • Develop maintainability prediction models and support preventive maintenance, sparing, and provisioning plans.
  • Perform Weibull analysis using qualification, production, and field data to predict failures and identify trends.
  • Lead investigations into design-validation, production-test, and field-return failures, and drive root-cause analysis and corrective and preventive actions to closure.
  • Support development milestone reviews by defining appropriate entry and exit criteria and guiding transitions from engineering development to high-rate production.
  • Develop and implement standardized reliability processes, tools, and infrastructure for design, manufacturing, and deployment operations.
  • Define the reliability growth program, including test-analyze-fix planning, and establish FRACAS and its supporting data pipeline.
  • Perform Level of Repair Analysis and maintainability modeling in partnership with Maintenance; provide spares and provisioning inputs from reliability predictions.
  • Drive design-for-reliability and design-for-maintainability requirements into engineering.
  • Lead and mentor engineers across the RAM discipline as the function grows.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers.
  • Top-tier benefits for full-time employees, described as comprehensive and competitive and available at little to no cost to employees.
