Requirements

  • Able to complete required physical demands and/or tasks.
  • Able to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
  • Understand the on-track safety training and qualification required of the roadway workers to be protected.
  • Proficient in radio procedures for communicating between RWIC/EIC’s and assigned work group.
  • Proficient in performing a job briefing with all roadway workers within their work location.
  • Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
  • Able to install a railroad derail and apply locking device.
  • Proficiency with electronic communications including email and text.
  • Proficiency with standard office applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • A minimum of 2 years in Maintenance in Way (MOW) and/or Trade Yard & Engine (TY&E).
  • UP - West On-Track Worker and Operating Rules.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates must be willing and able to travel frequently, including overnight stays, in alignment with project schedules and business needs.
  • Candidates are eligible to receive daily per diems for meals and hotels, plus mileage reimbursement for all billable days worked.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks.
  • Perform job site coordination and dispatcher/train communication.
  • Ensure various types of On-Track Safety in controlled and non-controlled track areas.
  • Provide required jobsite protection on each assignment, error-free and consistent with rules.
  • Communicate via radio with train dispatchers and engineers.
  • Ensure work groups are clear of limits during train movements.
  • Grant permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
  • Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site.
  • Ensure all personnel adhere to the safety requirements of the railroad.
  • Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including job set-up forms, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports.
  • Handle and place signs, derail, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds.
  • Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
  • Maintain a high level of communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture.

  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required to meet business needs.
