About The Position

The Railcar Repair Person is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing railcars to ensure compliance with FRA, AAR, and company safety standards. The role involves performing structural repairs—such as welding and component replacement—along with preventative maintenance on braking, coupler, and door systems. Additionally, they operate heavy machinery, document all work in maintenance systems, and adhere strictly to safety protocols while collaborating with team members to prioritize repairs and ensure safe operational release. This position falls under the company's safety-sensitive category. Successful candidates must comply with all company safety policies and procedures, including a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy and are subject to pre-employment, random, post-incident, and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training a plus.
  • Must pass a certified welding procedure test.
  • Certifications in welding, NDT, or mechanical trades.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, grammar, and basic math.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with industrial or heavy-equipment repair.
  • Proficient in welding and metal fabrication (MIG, stick, or flux-core).
  • Demonstrated ability reading blueprints, repair manuals, and technical diagrams.
  • Strong understanding of FRA and AAR regulations (or the commitment to acquire this knowledge).
  • Basic computer skills for entering repair data.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in welding, repair, or related heavy equipment manufacturing roles.
  • Previous work in railcar repair, heavy equipment maintenance, or industrial mechanics.
  • Experience with pneumatic, hydraulic, or brake systems.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects railcars for structural damage, wear, defects, and compliance with FRA, AAR, and company standards.
  • Diagnoses mechanical issues involving braking systems, couplers, doors, valves, and structural components.
  • Performs repairs including welding, cutting, grinding, and component replacement.
  • Conducts preventative maintenance to extend equipment life and reduce downtime.
  • Documents all work performed using maintenance logs, repair forms, and digital systems.
  • Operates heavy tools and equipment such as torches, jacks, pneumatic tools, and forklifts.
  • Follows safety protocols including lockout/tagout, confined space procedures, and PPE requirements.
  • Collaborates with supervisors and inspectors to prioritize repairs and ensures railcars are released safely.
  • Abides by the current laws and organizational policies and procedures designed and implemented to promote an environment which is free of harassment and other forms of illegal discriminatory behavior in the workplace.
  • Cooperates with, participates in, and supports the adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and practices in support of risk management and overall safety and soundness and the company’s compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Reports pertinent information to the immediate supervisor as requested, or according to an established schedule; compiles information as necessary or as directed and provides data to appropriate personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries relating to his/her particular area, or to requests from customers, other personnel, etc., within given time frames and within established policy.
  • Performs tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or re-designed depending upon individual circumstances.
