About The Position

The Radiology Technician will perform routine radiologic procedures ordered by the medical staff for the inmate population at the Federal Correctional Institute-Fort Dix. This role involves transmitting and retrieving radiographic images and reports electronically, scanning reports into the Bureau Electronic Medical Record (BEMR), and receiving training to retrieve and schedule radiographic consults. The technician will work with a diverse inmate population, evaluate radiographic equipment, and possess knowledge of emergency situations and pathological abnormalities as demonstrated by imaging. They will independently assess and select technical exposure factors and positions, explain procedures to patients, and coordinate the transfer of patient radiologic records. The technician will also work with the Clinical Director on monitoring and evaluation activities, act as a liaison between the radiologist and medical staff, and comply with correctional techniques and local medical protocols. Additional duties include wearing protective clothing, computerization and printing of logs and requisitions, timely completion of X-ray studies, transmitting X-rays for interpretation, and transcribing/scanning results to BEMR. The role requires the ability to identify significant findings for urgent reporting, assist with surveys and preparation for certifications, perform quality assurance tests, and review dosimeter badge reports. During downtime, the technician may be assigned tasks such as daily equipment checks, BEMR audits, obtaining vital signs, performing inventory, and scanning.

Requirements

Graduate from an accredited school or program for a Radiological Technologist.
Be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
Be licensed in the state of New Jersey as a Radiologist
A minimum of three (3) years of Radiological Technologist experience.
Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC)or the American Heart Association (AHA).
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
National Background Check with Inquiries, Fingerprints, and Drug Screen.

Responsibilities

Perform routine radiologic procedures ordered by the medical staff for the inmate population at the institution.
Transmit, retrieve radiographic images and reports electronically, and scan reports into inmates' Bureau Electronic Medical Record (BEMR).
Receive training to retrieve radiographic consults from BEMR and schedule them to perform all radiographic procedures.
Work with an inmate population from a variety of cultural, racial, religious, and ethnic backgrounds.
Evaluate radiographic equipment for calibrations and repairs.
Possess knowledge of basic emergency situations that may occur during special radiographic procedures.
Possess knowledge of various pathological abnormalities as demonstrated by radiographic imaging.
Notify the radiologist or referring Physician of any preliminary abnormalities seen while the patient is undergoing an exam, so that additional views or exams can be ordered if needed.
Independently assess and select technical exposure factors and positions necessary to obtain a proper quality diagnostic exam.
Receive patients and explain procedures to alleviate undue anxiety.
Independently perform all radiographic imaging.
Coordinate transfer of patient radiologic records to ensure continuity of care.
Work with the Clinical Director to ensure monitoring and evaluation activities are completed.
Act as liaison between radiologist and medic staff.
Receive training and orientation and comply with correctional techniques as they pertain to medical services.
Develop a working knowledge of the local medical protocols.
Wear outer protective clothing and abide by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention universal precautions.
Function in other duties commensurate with a Radiology Technician.
Computerization and printing of the daily log
Computerization and printing of exam requisitions
Complete all X-ray studies ordered by the medical staff in a timely manner.
Notify medical staff of orders approaching due date
Transmit x-rays to the radiologist for interpretation
Transcribe or scan results to BEMR for physician review
Possess the ability to identify significant findings that should be urgently reported to the Primary Care Provider Team
Assist with biennial FDA radiation survey and preparation for Program Review, American Correctional Association (ACA) certification, and Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC)
Perform Biannual quality assurance tests on shields, aprons, and gloves.
Review dosimeter badge reports and maintain records.
Maintain all clinical competencies required by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). This includes the general patient care procedure.
CPR certification.
Vital signs.
Sterile and medical aseptic technique.
Venipuncture.
Care of patient medical equipment (Oxygen Tank, IV Tubing, etc.).
During periods of downtime, the radiology technician is expected to accept assignments within the scope of their knowledge, skills, and clinical abilities. These tasks include, but are not limited to: Daily checks of medical equipment and supplies. Quality assurance audits in BEMR as assigned. Obtain and record vital signs. Perform PPE and supply inventory. Scanning.
