About The Position

The Anoka County Emergency Communication Department’s mission is to promote the safety and well-being of citizens by providing efficient and professional 911 dispatch services for all emergency and non-emergency calls and to provide technical management of the County’s E-911 system and public safety radio system. The department has an immediate opening for a Radio Technician who will perform various duties. Some of the critical responsibilities of this position include providing the technical operation and configuration of Anoka County’s emergency communication system. The Radio Technician is responsible for ensuring reliable communication to and from Anoka County’s 911 Dispatch Center and the public safety departments in Anoka County and adjacent metro partners. This is a full-time, non-exempt, on-site position.

Requirements

  • Requires accreditation from a technical school or applicable trades program
  • Two years (2,080 annual hours) years of job-related experience in public safety, dispatch, radio communication networks and maintenance or a closely related field.
  • In lieu of the required education, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
  • Successfully pass driver’s license background check

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Radio Communications, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology or related field
  • Possess or be able to obtain within six months of hire a Motorola, FCC or ETA International specific to RF Communications (CET, GROL, etc.) certification
  • Possess or be able to obtain within 24 months of hire a Network+ or CCNA certification
  • Knowledge of computer-based network systems and equipment, i.e., ARMER, 800 MHZ trunked radio simulcast system and mobile data terminal system, including computerized diagnostics and operational controls
  • Knowledge of state and federal rules, regulations, codes and standards governing radio communications operations and installation
  • Knowledge of the use, operation, calibration and maintenance of various electronic tools, diagnostic equipment and software
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain all public safety communications end-user equipment from phone and radio dispatch consoles to all subscriber radios within Anoka County.
  • Configure, repair, align and track all end-user equipment.
  • Add and remove radios from the 800MHz system.
  • Develop and update radio code plugs.
  • Upgrade software/firmware and program radios on the system as required.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on the ARMER emergency communications infrastructure.
  • Test and align communications infrastructure and network equipment at the 911 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) and at Radio Towers to ensure reliable communications to the end-user.
  • Repair and test radio transmitting and receiving equipment in accordance with diagrams and manufacturer's specifications, using electrical measuring instruments, wiring diagrams, and hand tools.
  • Use and maintain applicable test equipment for the purposes of maintaining subscriber fleet and ARMER system integrity.
  • Support vendors and contractors with installation and maintenance of equipment.
  • View and analyze technical issue logs daily.
  • Provide advice and information to department for communication needs.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group as assigned.
