About The Position

A Radio Dispatcher I ensures that passengers and materials are transported in a timely manner by establishing routes, scheduling vehicles and dispatching drivers by means of a two-way base radio and the telephone. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek, however positions in some agencies are required to work a rotating shift to provide 24-hour coverage, seven days per week. Work is performed in an office setting where the employee is not exposed to uncomfortable environmental or hazardous working conditions. Work requires moderate physical exertion.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Two years of experience in dispatching or driving vehicles.
  • Ability to operate a two-way base radio and related communications equipment.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to maintain records.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of City Street locations.
  • Knowledge of basic Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations.
  • Ability to read maps.
  • Ability to develop efficient vehicle routes and schedules.
  • Some positions in this class may require a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial or equivalent out-of-state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
