About The Position

This full-time position in the Radiation Oncology department at Advocate Christ Medical Center involves providing comprehensive patient care. The role requires a Registered Nurse to perform assessments, plan patient care, implement nursing interventions, and evaluate the effectiveness of care. Responsibilities include collecting data for the Illinois State Cancer Registry, assessing patient and staff learning needs, coordinating patient scheduling and insurance information, developing patient education materials, collaborating with the healthcare team, and ensuring a safe environment with proper infection control practices. The nurse will also assist with medical procedures, function as a role model, and serve as a nursing resource for technical and clerical staff.

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited degree program in nursing (AD or BSN)
• 4 years clinical experience.
• Clinically appropriate skills.
• Ability to cooperate and work well with internal and external customers.
• Communication skills.
• Current licensure in the State of Illinois as a Registered Nurse
• Ability to demonstrate a commitment to patient focused care.
• Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations.

• Ability to perform lifting/transfer activities related to patients.
• Ability to recognize needs and behaviors of specific age group patients.
• Standard precautions for radiation safety as per IDNS.
• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
• Access to the entire patient clinical record.
• Access to current and historical information about patients.
• Access to patient information located in IDX and RadNet and/or other radiology systems.

Responsibilities

• Collects necessary data on all patients to be filed with the Illinois State Cancer Registry.
• Assists Radiation Oncology staff to identify actual and potential patient care problems.
• Assesses learning needs of Radiation Oncology staff as well as patients receiving radiation therapy.
• Assesses, plans, and provides information to Radiation Oncology students.
• Monitors the physical environment of patients in relation to safety and efficiency of care delivery.
• Assists with scheduling patients for consultation, follow-up and help with obtaining correct insurance information for registration.
• Writes and reviews patient education materials and makes modification in collaboration with Supervisor and Medical Director of Radiation Oncology.
• Reviews and generates nursing policy and procedures in Radiation Oncology.
• Collaborates with members of the health care team (Radiation Oncology, Medical Physics, all physicians and Hematology Oncology) in planning and initiating referrals to hospital/community resources.
• Coordinates with pharmaceutical and nutritional support representatives in evaluating products for Radiation Oncology use.
• Coordinates scheduling of inpatient consults.
• Assists Radiation Oncologist with various medical procedures.
• Functions as role model when giving direct patient care.
• Intervenes directly and constructively with peer care providers when patient care quality or safety are at risk.
• Demonstrates leadership skills and follow through in working with Radiation Therapists and ancillary staff.
• Functions as a nursing resource in Radiation Oncology for technical staff, clerical staff and community.
• Ensures safe environment and infection control practices among health care team members.
• Provides and/or coordinates annual inservices on safe environment and infection control practices for the Radiation Oncology staff.
• Provides accurate documentation to create a permanent record that is consistent with established policy and procedure.
• Evaluate tools used to document patient needs to meet quality assurance criteria.
• Collaborates with other health team members in weekly chart rounds of patients undergoing radiation therapy.
• Evaluates patient needs according to type of treatment received: External Radiation Therapy, High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy, Low-Dose Rate Brachytherapy, Prostate Implanting or Stereotactic Radiosurgery.
