Radar Modes Lead Engineer

Honeywell Aerospace•Torrance, CA
•$157,000 - $197,000

About The Position

The Radar Modes Lead Engineer leads and manages projects in Honeywell Aerospace’s RF/Radar Advanced Tech team, contributes to radar engineering design, and manages project proposal efforts. The role leads the execution of radar signal processing, modes, and software functions throughout radar development programs, including weather signal processing, waveform design and implementation, embedded radar software, software architecture, and development of future multi-mode radar capabilities. Working as a systems lead alongside other technical leads, this engineer establishes the technical approach and software capabilities for radar prototypes. The role calls for hands-on technical leadership of end-to-end radar signal processing, modes, and software development from concept through integrated prototype demonstration. Work includes airborne weather radar, radar-mode and waveform development, signal-processing algorithms, processing hardware requirements, modeling and simulation, radar system architecture, prototyping, and phased-array radar capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).
  • 6 or more years of experience in a related field.
  • Experience in radar systems, such as radar modes, radar signal processing, or radar systems engineering.
  • Systems Engineering experience that includes at least two of the following: requirements; design; specification development; modeling, simulation, or performance analysis; hardware/software integration; test and verification.
  • Must be a US Person, a US citizen, or a US permanent resident due to contractual requirements and US export-control laws and regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or PhD degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • Track record of solving difficult, complex problems through innovation, analysis, engineering, and experimentation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated through published results and public presentations in the field.
  • Ability to engage with customers and partners to define needs and requirements and develop solutions through rigorous analysis, engineering, and experimentation.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and results to research sponsors, scientific peers, and business leadership through presentations, publications, and proposal writing.
  • Strong understanding of aircraft and avionics integration.
  • Hands-on experience defining and developing radar system architectures, including subsystems, functional allocation, interfaces, data flows, hardware/software partitioning, and the physical hardware and processing required for an integrated radar system.
  • Experience taking radar concepts, architectures, modes, waveforms, and algorithms beyond analysis and simulation into functional hardware prototypes or demonstrators.
  • Experience developing advanced radar capabilities across multiple applications, modes, frequency bands, radar architectures, or sensing functions, including multi-mode radar development and integration.
  • Familiarity with airborne safety, hardware, software, and certification development processes and standards.
  • Experience with phased-array or electronically scanned radar architecture, mode development, beamforming, scan/resource management, and array/beam performance characteristics.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage RF/Radar Advanced Tech projects, radar engineering design, and project proposal efforts.
  • Lead radar signal-processing, modes, and software functions throughout development programs, from concept through integrated prototype demonstration.
  • Develop airborne weather radar capabilities, including weather detection, measurement and characterization, turbulence detection, predictive windshear, ground-clutter mitigation, and attenuation compensation.
  • Develop radar modes from operational needs through mode definition, processing, resource needs, implementation, and integration.
  • Design and optimize radar waveforms, PRFs, bandwidths, timing, ambiguity, Doppler considerations, beam and scan strategies, dwell, revisit and update rates, coverage, and resource allocation across modes.
  • Develop radar signal-processing and algorithms, including range/Doppler processing, detection, CFAR, beamforming, angle estimation, clutter suppression, and tracking; implement and optimize them for real-time radar systems.
  • Translate waveform, signal-processing, and mode needs into digital processing requirements, and evaluate processor architectures against radar performance and integration requirements.
  • Develop and use MATLAB, Python, or similar tools for radar architecture, waveform and algorithm development, performance modeling, and analysis of measured radar data.
  • Define and develop radar system architectures, including subsystems, functional allocation, interfaces, data flows, hardware/software partitioning, and the hardware and processing needed for an integrated radar system.
  • Take radar concepts, architectures, modes, waveforms, and algorithms from analysis and simulation into functional hardware prototypes or demonstrators.
  • Develop and integrate advanced radar capabilities and multi-mode radar systems across applications, modes, frequency bands, architectures, or sensing functions.
  • Apply familiarity with airborne safety, hardware, software, and certification development processes and standards.
  • Develop phased-array or electronically scanned radar architecture and modes, including beamforming and scan/resource management, and account for array and beam characteristics in radar performance.
