About The Position

This role encompasses several key functions within the racing office, including Entry Clerk, Placing Judge, Claims Clerk, and Stakes Coordinator. The Racing Official is responsible for accurately entering horse racing data, managing race entries and results, verifying claims, coordinating stakes races, and ensuring compliance with racing regulations. This position requires excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, strong communication abilities, and the capacity to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have experience in the racing industry and be able to obtain the necessary licenses.

Requirements

  • Must be able to stand on your feet for long periods of time.
  • Remains positive at all times, even during high guest volume times.
  • Must be able to obtain a Racing License in the State of Ohio.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the Racing Commission regulations.
  • Must be able to obtain an Ohio Lottery Commission license.
  • Has either worked in the racing field or graduated from Racing Industry education.
  • Computer experience required.
  • Maintains interpersonal working relationships among personnel and the public.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Enter horses into races by computer, in-person, via phone/text, etc.
  • Verify accuracy of entry information and determine eligibility and starting requirements.
  • Solicit entries from Trainers and Authorized Agents when required.
  • Enter entry information into the database using the RTO-Incompass system.
  • Participate in the Entry Draw process.
  • Generate, produce, and verify the accuracy of daily racing information.
  • Distribute necessary information to individuals, outlets, and departments.
  • Set up Photo Finish and Teletimer equipment prior to each live race.
  • Enter information during live races and communicate to the Tote Board and TV room.
  • Determine the order of finish for all horses in a race.
  • Examine photo finishes and process outcomes on the electronic tote board.
  • Communicate with Stewards, Mutuel Manager’s office, Bookkeeper, and Equibase.
  • Post unofficial/official results accurately to the Tote board.
  • Communicate results, inquiries, and objections with the Mutuel Department, Stewards, and Track Announcer.
  • Disseminate entire live racing card results to the Bookkeeper and Media Outlets.
  • Verify accuracy of information on Claim Envelope and Claim Slip.
  • Verify current funds of Horseperson claiming a race horse.
  • Communicate with Stewards, Bookkeeper, Equibase, and Clerk of Scales.
  • Properly manage and store sensitive information and documents related to Claims.
  • Verify eligibility for horse(s) and connections, including proper registration requirements as outlined by the Ohio State Racing Commission.
  • Communicate with Horse Owners and Trainers.
  • Target specific horses to ensure a quality racing product.
  • Ensure all fees related to the Stakes race have been paid on time.
  • Properly manage and document sensitive information related to Stakes races.
  • Enter data, generate reports, and disseminate accurate information to OSRC, Stewards, Owners, Trainers, Agents, Equibase, media outlets, and other racing officials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Racing Secretary.
  • Stay informed on all ongoing/upcoming promotions.
  • Possess knowledge of thoroughbred and thoroughbred racing.
  • Communicate with Horse Owners, Horse Trainers, Agents, and Jockeys.
