About The Position

This role involves a variety of critical functions within the racing office, including managing horse entries, processing race draws, determining race outcomes, handling horse claims, and coordinating stakes races. The position requires meticulous attention to detail, strong communication skills, and a thorough understanding of racing regulations and procedures. The Racing Official will interact with trainers, owners, agents, stewards, and other racing personnel to ensure the smooth operation of live racing events.

Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain an Ohio Racing License.
  • Must have worked in the racing field or graduated from Racing Industry education.
  • Computer experience required.
  • Maintains interpersonal working relationships among personnel and the public.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to move about the area easily.
  • Must have excellent guest service.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Must be able to stand on your feet for long periods of time.
  • Remains positive at all times, even during high guest volume times.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the Racing Commission regulations.
  • Must be able to obtain an Ohio Lottery Commission license.

Responsibilities

  • Enter horses into races by computer, in-person, or via phone/text.
  • Verify accuracy of entry information and determine eligibility and starting requirements.
  • Solicit entries from Trainers and Authorized Agents.
  • Enter and compile entry information into the RTO-Incompass system.
  • Participate in the Entry Draw process.
  • Generate, produce, and verify accuracy of daily racing information.
  • Distribute necessary information to individuals, outlets, and departments.
  • Set up Photo Finish and Teletimer equipment.
  • Enter information during live races and communicate to the Tote Board and TV room.
  • Determine the order of finish for all horses in a race.
  • Examine photo finishes and process outcomes on the electronic tote board.
  • Communicate with Stewards, Mutuel Manager’s office, Bookkeeper, and Equibase.
  • Post unofficial/official results accurately to the Tote board.
  • Communicate results, inquiries, and objections with the Mutuel Department, Stewards, and Track Announcer.
  • Disseminate entire live racing card results to the Bookkeeper and Media Outlets.
  • Verify accuracy of information on Claim Envelopes and Claim Slips.
  • Verify current funds of Horsepersons claiming a race horse.
  • Communicate with Stewards, Bookkeeper, Equibase, and Clerk of Scales regarding claims.
  • Properly manage and store sensitive information and documents related to Claims.
  • Verify eligibility for horse(s) and connections, including proper registration requirements.
  • Communicate with Horse Owners and Trainers regarding stakes races.
  • Target specific horses to ensure a quality racing product.
  • Ensure all fees related to Stakes races are paid on time.
  • Properly manage and document sensitive information related to Stakes races.
  • Enter data, generate reports, and disseminate accurate information to relevant parties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Racing Secretary.
  • Stay informed on all ongoing/upcoming promotions.
  • Possess knowledge of thoroughbred and thoroughbred racing.
  • Communicate with Horse Owners, Horse Trainers, Agents, and Jockeys.
