About The Position

Requirements

Working toward a PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Proven hands-on experience operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting laboratory-scale vacuum-processing or materials-processing equipment.
Experience analyzing data from relevant material characterization and performance-testing methods.
Strong analytical mindset with experience applying Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies to systematically evaluate process variables.
Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills, with a track record of presenting complex scientific data clearly and concisely.
Available to work a 12-week internship from May or early June through August 2027, five days per week onsite at the Boston location.

Nice To Haves

Hands-on experience with advanced vacuum-based coating or surface-engineering processes.
Understanding of material integrity, durability, and process–property relationships in engineered coatings or related materials.
Familiarity with diagnostic methods used to evaluate and improve vacuum or plasma-based processes.

Responsibilities

Support the development, operation, and troubleshooting of advanced coating processes and related equipment.
Operate and maintain laboratory-scale vacuum-processing equipment in accordance with established procedures and safety requirements.
Plan and execute experiments to improve process quality, consistency, and product performance.
Evaluate process conditions and equipment data to understand relationships between operating parameters, material properties, and product performance.
Use appropriate analytical and testing methods to assess material characteristics, integrity, durability, and overall performance.
Analyze results, document key learnings, and communicate findings and recommendations to cross-functional partners.
