About The Position

Perform functions to direct and supervise engineers engaged in the research and development of machining processes and products. In addition, to engage and cultivate relationships and collaboration with educational and research entities as a manufacturing expert, vet new technologies by theory and/or through testing in order to provide Makino customer prospects and Makino existing customers with strong technical guidance as well as highlight the Makino machine advantages.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Manufacturing.
  • In addition to all above, a minimum of 10 years of machining experience.
  • Software experience with data analysis tools as well as CAD, CAM and machine path verification software.
  • Strong analytical capability with the ability to translate data into actionable business decisions.
  • Proven ability to drive cost savings, improve supplier performance, and optimize inventory.
  • Ability to build tools, reports, and processes from the ground up.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a bias toward action and execution.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to influence without authority.
  • High level of ownership, accountability, and attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred to hold a Masters degree in Engineering and/or Material Science.
  • Best case would be PhD education level for extensive theories and advanced research understanding.

Responsibilities

  • Identifying new technologies that may be helpful in promoting Makino machines to customers by leveraging Makino machine capabilities, suggestions for new or enhanced capabilities or solving new manufacturing problems using Makino machines.
  • Assuring that established testing practices are followed, data is collected appropriately, analyzed correctly, leading to solid conclusions that are defensible.
  • Utilizing prior technologies, advancements or developments in order to augment the results of testing by Makino R&D.
  • Direct the preparation of details and examine results for exactness, neatness and conformance to specifications requirements, engineering principles, procedures and company policies.
  • Design and develop product per requirements and specification, develop sketches, criteria and data and draw layout drawings. Ascertain if there are mechanical, electrical, structural heating, ventilating and air conditioning factors to consider. Submit to management for review, approval and recommendations. Make adjustments, modifications or changes as warranted.
  • Verifying essential reports are generated for technical review, reference and in cases where the information could benefit Makino sales or support that those reports are appropriately targeted for those groups’ utilization.
  • Support sales as needed by presenting results generated or vetted by the R&D team.
  • Present papers and research findings at relevant forums.
  • Review prospective product or process proposals to develop and the design parameters.
  • Assign projects to research and development engineers in accordance to their capabilities, give direction, rectify problems, prepare work schedules and set deadlines to ensure completion of testing.
  • Conduct performance reviews, provide opportunities for additional training as required for personal development or research projects.
  • Manage collaboration with industry leaders in the field, customers, university and government agencies.
  • Work with tooling manufacturers on new tooling designs, development and testing.
  • Work with Makino product groups and project teams to coordinate activities, resolve problems or provide technical assistance of support.
  • Stay abreast of new developments, trends and practices in the industry through technical research and published articles.
  • Coordinate research findings and collaboration with MSL and other Makino affiliates.
  • Seek appropriate patent protections as needed for Makino Mason inventions.
  • Track patent costs including patent pursuit costs, maintenance fees on existing patents, etc.
  • Maintain searchable test records and reports.
  • Manage costs of various research efforts and testing activities.
  • Evaluate tested solutions with technical feasibility for proper returns on investment before and after testing is considered or executed.
  • Establish connections to key universities within the US and possibly abroad to share ongoing research regarding new technologies.
  • Engage with industry leaders and organizations that affect Makino customers’ and Makino regarding new technical requirements, performance and efficiencies.
  • Direct and supervise engineers engaged in the research and development of products and processes for the company.
  • Perform personnel evaluations, recommend salary actions.
  • Responsible and accountable for the personal development of the staff members.
