About The Position

The Geological Resources Team conducts multidisciplinary applied research and develops approaches to improve understanding of geological subsurface processes related to conventional and unconventional resources, as well as low-carbon resources. Areas of specialization include structural geology, organic and inorganic geochemistry, rock physics, and geomechanics. The Graduate Summer Intern supports a defined, supervised research project involving laboratory experimentation, data analysis, modeling, literature review, or evaluation of emerging technologies related to resources characterization, exploration, and development. Under the guidance of experienced researchers, the intern contributes to project deliverables while gaining practical experience in an industrial R&D environment. The role may include laboratory work, technology evaluation, workflow development, analysis of geological or production data, and preparation of technical reports and presentations. The internship is eligible for course credit; students should consult their academic advisor or university.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, geoscience, physics, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Current enrollment in a graduate program in engineering, geoscience, physics, mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Ability to review technical literature, analyze results, maintain research records, and communicate findings clearly in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, follow guidance, and demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic.
  • Availability for the full internship term.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant coursework or research experience in geology, porous media, fluid flow, geochemistry, petrophysics, geomechanics, laboratory characterization, or related subsurface systems.
  • Experience in laboratory experimentation, data analysis, modeling, numerical methods, or scientific computing.
  • Familiarity with technical computing or programming tools such as Python, C++, or MATLAB.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to a defined research project involving structural geology, organic or inorganic geochemistry, rock physics, or geomechanics for conventional, unconventional, or low-carbon resources.
  • Conduct focused literature reviews and summarize relevant advances in resources characterization, exploration, and development.
  • Assist with laboratory experiments, technology evaluations, or workflow development under the guidance of experienced researchers.
  • Explore topics such as basic rock and fluids characterization, chemical- and physical-properties-based exploration workflows, physical properties modeling and prediction, and multiscale faulting and fracturing.
  • Analyze experimental results and, as applicable, geological, petrophysical, completion, or production data using appropriate methods and software.
  • Develop, modify, or apply code and research software as needed to support data analysis, modeling, experimental workflows, or technology development.
  • Apply scientific and engineering principles to investigate research questions, identify trends, and develop well-supported conclusions.
  • Document methods, assumptions, results, and limitations to support reproducible research.
  • Collaborate with team members and other R&D groups, participate in technical discussions, and incorporate feedback into assigned work.
  • Prepare a technical report, project updates, and a final presentation summarizing the research problem, approach, results, and conclusions.
  • Support preparation of publications, conference materials, or other technical communications when appropriate.
  • Follow laboratory safety procedures and contribute to a safe, accident-free work environment.
  • Comply with company safety, cybersecurity, confidentiality, and professional conduct requirements.
  • Perform other project-related duties within the scope of the internship.

Benefits

  • Opportunity eligible for internship course credit (credits earned); students should check with their academic advisor or university.
