Summer 2027 Data Science R&D Graduate Intern

Highmark Health•Carolina, PA

About The Position

The Summer 2027 Data Science Research & Development (DSRD) Graduate Internship gives graduate students practical experience applying data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and software engineering to clinical and healthcare challenges. Interns work with researchers, data scientists, machine learning engineers, and software developers on research initiatives involving clinical, medical, and healthcare insurance data. Work may include advanced analytics, predictive modeling, artificial intelligence, graph technologies, computer vision, and generative AI. The internship offers four research tracks: Knowledge Graphs, including healthcare data models, GraphQL interfaces, Graph Neural Networks, and GraphRAG; Medical Imaging, including image-processing pipelines and computer vision for clinical image analysis, anatomical segmentation, and pathology classification; Predictive Modeling, including healthcare risk, disease progression, and patient outcome models with attention to explainability and fairness; and AI Applications, including AI agent frameworks, natural language processing, prompt engineering, and clinical information extraction using generative AI. Participants contribute to research projects, help design and develop analytical solutions, conduct model evaluation and experimentation, and communicate findings to technical and business audiences. The program provides hands-on training, exposure to career opportunities, and mentorship while interns develop professional skills and expertise. Work is performed under supervision, with guidance and mentoring from senior personnel.
