Quantum Technical Program Manager

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$119,800 - $304,200

About The Position

Microsoft Quantum is developing a scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computer through work spanning quantum hardware, error correction, and integration with Azure. The team’s full-stack strategy includes advances in quantum device physics, scalable readout, and cryoelectronics-powered control infrastructure. Microsoft is seeking a Senior-to-Principal-level Quantum Technical Program Manager to lead end-to-end delivery of next-generation quantum hardware systems. The role drives cross-functional execution across research, engineering, and external partners to develop scalable, production-ready quantum solutions. Working with subsystem research and development leaders in areas such as control, packaging, and test and measurement, the TPM aligns roadmaps, manages risks, and delivers critical milestones. The role collaborates with researchers, engineers, technical program managers, supply-chain experts, cloud architects, and external partners to accelerate the scale-up of topological qubits and quantum systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience in engineering, product or technical program management, data analysis, or product development, or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Must provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, or other protected status as required to assess eligibility to access export-controlled information; citizenship is verified with a valid passport, with other applicable documents accepted for lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in a relevant field such as quantum information, physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or hardware systems, or equivalent applied experience in quantum or cryogenic hardware programs.
  • 10+ years of experience managing multi-year, highly complex hardware product portfolios involving deep or first-of-a-kind technology, such as board or SoC bring-up, BIOS and driver development, quantum systems, ASICs, FPGAs, advanced chip packaging, cryoelectronics, or high-reliability hardware.
  • Direct experience with quantum device development, quantum error correction, or quantum measurement and control hardware.
  • Hands-on development or testing experience with quantum hardware systems, including cryogenic systems.
  • Experience with semiconductor, electronics, or advanced materials supply chains, contract manufacturers, or research and development foundries.
  • Demonstrated success leading external research, university, government, or consortium partnerships in advanced hardware or scientific domains.
  • Experience transferring technology from research and development to scaled engineering and manufacturing, including developing and auditing hardware quality systems and test protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced product development environment within a matrixed organization.
  • Ability to use AI tools to improve innovation and efficiency, such as performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, and day-to-day task automation.
  • Experience applying AI to engineering and lab workflows, including designing and building agents or copilots for experiment setup, log triage, measurement reports, protocol templates, and knowledge retrieval.
  • Experience evaluating agentic solutions using measurable metrics and human-in-the-loop safeguards in accordance with Microsoft Responsible AI requirements for generative AI.

Responsibilities

  • Lead program management for quantum hardware initiatives from concept development and engineering design through prototyping, validation, operational scaling, and ongoing delivery.
  • Collaborate with system architects, research scientists, and hardware engineers to achieve program goals.
  • Develop and maintain hardware-platform roadmaps with program management leadership, engineering teams, and executive stakeholders; align milestones, resources, schedules, and risk responses with long-term goals.
  • Coordinate teams across quantum device physics, cryoelectronics, materials science, hardware control, manufacturing, supply chain, integration, and cloud hardware operations.
  • Manage relationships with external foundries, research laboratories, equipment vendors, and strategic partners; establish requirements and support compliance with Microsoft quality, safety, and data-security standards.
  • Identify, monitor, and mitigate technical, schedule, and operational risks; apply lessons learned and adapt plans as technologies and program needs evolve.
  • Oversee Agile program processes and ceremonies, provide regular reviews and updates, and remove obstacles to timely milestone delivery.
  • Incorporate feedback from internal and pilot customers, including researchers, manufacturing partners, and Azure Quantum platform teams, to improve hardware and processes.
  • Prepare concise, data-driven updates on program status, milestones, risks, dependencies, and impact for executive and other stakeholders.
  • Promote respect, collaboration, integrity, and inclusivity; mentor team members and foster a learning-oriented environment within the quantum TPM organization.
  • Embody Microsoft's Culture and Values.
