Quantum Scientist - Decoding Theorist

QuEra Computing, Inc.•Boston, MA
•$130,400 - $211,900

About The Position

QuEra Computing is seeking a Quantum Scientist to develop decoder algorithms and advance the theory of quantum error correction (QEC) for neutral atom quantum computers. The role focuses on designing and analyzing decoding methods for quantum memories and fault-tolerant logical circuits, and studying how code structure and realistic noise affect logical performance, computational complexity, and scalability. Research may involve algorithmic, machine learning, and hybrid approaches. In collaboration with theory, software, and experimental teams, the Quantum Scientist will build reference implementations, conduct numerical studies, and identify decoding strategies that improve fault-tolerant quantum computation and inform practical implementation.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong background in quantum error correction, quantum codes, and fault tolerance.
  • Research experience in decoder design and analysis of algorithmic complexity.
  • Experience evaluating decoders using analytical methods, numerical simulation, or both.
  • Strong scientific programming skills for decoder research and clear communication.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience decoding quantum memories or logical circuits under realistic circuit-level noise.
  • Experience with threshold estimation, finite-size scaling, or theoretical analysis of decoding performance.
  • Experience with machine learning, probabilistic inference, or hybrid methods for QEC decoding.
  • Experience decoding qLDPC or other quantum codes under loss, correlated errors, or hardware-informed noise models.
  • Experience collaborating with experimental or software teams to connect decoder research with practical constraints.
