About The Position

The Quality Engineer will establish and lead quality practices for a growing SaaS product used in regulated, sensitive workflows. This hands-on senior individual-contributor role has no direct reports and requires independently identifying product risks, setting priorities across teams, defining what “done” means, and providing evidence-based release readiness decisions. Initial focus will be automated testing and release checks for work related to new federal Medicaid rules taking effect January 1, 2027. The role covers a web application, services, external integrations, and AI chat features. The engineer will build and maintain automated suites, embed testing in delivery teams, evaluate AI behavior, manage realistic test data under strict access and data-protection rules, and help identify and address security vulnerabilities. The position is fully remote across the U.S., with live collaboration during U.S. business hours, and is a full-time, permanent role of about 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in quality, testing, or software engineering.
  • Experience writing automation that runs in CI and is maintained by other engineers.
  • Experience building at least one testing practice from a low baseline, including choosing tools, writing initial suites, integrating them into CI, and explaining what was left untested.
  • Strong test coding skills in Python or TypeScript across APIs, browsers, and pipelines, including headless browser runs and integration tests for failing dependencies.
  • Experience testing business rules by learning the relevant policy, identifying gaps, and writing tests based on the answers.
  • Experience serving as the sole quality person across several teams and setting priorities independently without an assigned backlog.
  • Clear written communication for both technical and non-technical audiences, including the ability to challenge deadlines using evidence.

Responsibilities

  • Identify where the product is most likely to break and prioritize testing accordingly.
  • Build end-to-end user journeys, smoke tests that run on every build, and integration tests in code that engineers review and maintain.
  • Select testing tools and run automated tests in GitHub Actions.
  • Provide a ready/not-ready assessment before each release, documenting what passed, failed, and remains untested.
  • Write plain-language summaries for non-engineers describing what has been verified, and challenge risky release dates with evidence.
  • Work with customer-facing teams to test features during development, shifting between teams as workload changes.
  • Set a shared definition of done and coach engineers on testing their own work.
  • Run functional, regression, and accessibility tests across browsers and devices, including checks of customer-specific configurations.
  • Test APIs and asynchronous service flows, and write contract tests for external systems.
  • Test product behavior when dependencies are slow, unavailable, or return incorrect data.
  • Build AI evaluation suites using golden datasets, rerun them after prompt or model changes, and test guardrails.
  • Use AI tools to write, maintain, and triage tests.
  • Create realistic test data for a complex system while following strict access and data-protection rules.
  • Help identify and fix security vulnerabilities in the application and its infrastructure.

Benefits

  • An engineering buddy to help with setup from day one.
  • Opportunity to have real authority over testing strategy, automation, and quality standards.
  • Direct impact helping families access and retain benefits for which they are eligible.
