About The Position

The Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) is designated by the Company as a vessel crew member and shall be responsible for representing, enforcing, and preserving Company interests, policies and procedures to other crew, clients, sub-contractors, and duly authorized authorities. The duties of the QMED include, but are not limited to, the full implementation of the Company Safety Management System (SMS), Code of Conduct, Company Policies, and Company Mission Statement. The QMED will ensure the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the vessel’s engineering systems, including operating equipment and machinery, participation in dry bulk and liquid cargo operations, participating in cargo and rigging operations, performing preventative and routine maintenance, conducting safety and security inspections, and monitor the safety of the crew and persons in addition to crew, protection of the environment, protection of the cargo or property of the charterer, and other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Chief Engineer and/or Officer in Charge of the Engineering Watch (OICEW) or that the QMED recognizes as essential to his/her responsibility.

Requirements

• Possess all valid flag state (and coastal state as applicable) credentials required by law for service as QMED on the route and class of vessel appointed to (examples: Merchant Mariners Credential, TWIC Card, Medical Certificate etc.).
• Ability to read and write English as well as render, understand, and react to commands given in English.
• Minimum one year experience on vessels of similar size, route and industrial mission in a position not lower than Oiler.

Nice To Haves

• A valid Passport is highly preferred.
• Six months as QMED is preferred.
• Possess a valid riggers certificate from a recognized issuing authority.
• Agreeable to occasional requirement to crew change by helicopter and maintain a valid OPITO BOSIET credential.

Responsibilities

• Following the safety and environmental-protection policies of the Company; motivating other crew in the observation of those policies; obeying appropriate orders and instructions from vessel officers; and ensuring that specified requirements of the SMS, Code of Conduct and Company policies are observed.
• Monitoring the safety and pollution prevention aspects of the operation of their ship and ensuring that adequate resources and shore-based support are applied, as required. Any deficiencies must be immediately reported to the Master and Company DPA.
• Performing responsibilities QMED aboard their vessel or when otherwise engaged in the business of the Company in the capacity of a QMED in a manner consistent with this job description, as directed by the Master.
• Serving as an engineering watch stander and being responsible for engineering, maintenance, safety, and security duties as assigned by the OICEW.
• Performing preventative and routine maintenance and cleaning of the vessel, operating equipment and machinery, serving as a rigger and participating in dry bulk and liquid cargo transfer operations of the vessel at the direction of the Chief Engineer and/or OICEW and in compliance with the applicable laws and regulations of the vessel’s flag state, coastal state, and the Company SMS in a manner consistent with maintaining the safety of the crew and the protection of the environment.
• Maintaining flag state and Company required credentials appropriate for their vessel, route, and industrial mission.
• Escorting, observing, and monitoring the safety of visitors to the vessel including vendors, sub-contractors and other third parties as directed by the Chief Engineer, OICNW, and or OICEW in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Company.
