About The Position

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT), Office of Property and Facilities Services seeks a qualified individual for the position of Qualified Craft Worker (Plumbing and Steamfitting) for their Region 2 office in East Lyme, CT. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position, with a first shift schedule from 7:30 am to 4 pm, and is office/on-site. The role involves performing highly skilled plumbing and steamfitting tasks, including fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of various interior and exterior plumbing-related building components. This includes domestic, sanitary, and drainage utilities, fixtures, water heaters, line snaking/jetting, well water systems, oil/water and wastewater holding equipment, natural gas supply lines, and pneumatic compressors. The individual will also diagnose and troubleshoot plumbing problems, and collaborate with other trades for HVAC and fuel dispensing equipment maintenance. A considerable amount of driving is involved, requiring a valid Connecticut driver’s license. The ideal candidate will have experience servicing multiple facilities, working with well water and sewage systems, and possess knowledge of oil and gas-fired heating systems. Dependability, self-motivation, the ability to multitask, and initiative with minimal supervision are necessary.

Requirements

Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the plumbing and steamfitting trade.
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled plumbing and steamfitting trades.
Maintain a valid Connecticut driver’s license.
Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard plumbing and steamfitting trade practices.
Interpersonal skills.
Oral and written communication skills.
Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records.
Utilize computer software.

Nice To Haves

Experience servicing multiple facilities.
Experience working with both well water and sewage systems.

Possesses a valid CT plumbing and/or trade-related license.
Experienced in the CT plumbing and relative building and safety codes including lock-out/tag-out procedures and “Call Before You Dig” permitting.
Experienced reading and performing work as detailed in architectural, manufacturer and engineering drawings and specifications as well as capable of providing drawings and specifications sufficient for working with other trades.
Experienced in the operation and maintenance of building automation systems sufficient to access, troubleshoot, and repair them.
Experienced with well systems and sewage lift stations.
Experienced with Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

Responsibilities

Perform highly skilled plumbing/steamfitting tasks involving the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of various interior and exterior plumbing related building components including, but not limited to: Domestic, sanitary and drainage utilities, and garage floor drainage systems.
Install and repair fixtures and water heaters.
Perform line snaking/jetting, work with well water systems, oil/water and wastewater holding equipment, natural gas supply lines, and pneumatic compressors, and associated plumbing.
Perform highly skilled plumbing fabrication, installation, and repair in a safe and efficient manner.
Diagnose/troubleshoot and resolve plumbing problems typical to commercial and industrial buildings.
Work with other trades as required in the repair and maintenance of HVAC and fuel dispensing equipment.
Perform highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard plumbing and steamfitting trade practices and codes.
Assemble, install and repair air, gas, water, steam and sewer disposal systems.
Cut, bend, ream and thread pipes.
Caulk and test joints.
Install and repair gas, water, steam and sanitary fixtures.
Cover and insulate tanks, pipes and related objects.
Work with high pressure hot water and steam systems.
Perform minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks.
Add water treatment chemicals to boilers.
Make estimates of time, personnel and determine and obtain required materials on assigned tasks.
Keep necessary records.
May braze pipes.
May inspect and repair steam traps and/or vaults fed by main system at various locations.
May remove pipe insulation materials associated with the repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods.
May inspect and repair medical gas systems.
May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required.
May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts.
May operate heavy equipment.
May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports.
Perform related duties as required.
