About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Administrative Services (DAS), is accepting applications for Qualified Craft Worker (Automotive and Mechanical Equipment) opportunities within the Fleet Operations Division. This role involves performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the automotive and mechanical equipment trade area, including complex repairs, maintenance, diagnostic work, fabrication, and safety inspections on State-owned light-duty vehicles. Technicians will utilize highly technical automotive diagnostic service equipment and will be provided with all necessary tools and specialty equipment, including access to OEM service information and digital repair manuals. Work uniforms and an annual allowance for safety shoes are provided.

Requirements

Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the automotive and mechanical equipment trade.
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled automotive and mechanical equipment trades.
Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard automotive and mechanical equipment trade practices.
Interpersonal skills.
Oral and written communication skills.
Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records.
Ability to utilize computer software.
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
May be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and/or environmental conditions.

Nice To Haves

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.
Experience performing technical duties within the automotive and mechanical equipment trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.
Experience diagnosing and repairing Suspension and Steering components in a light-duty automotive repair shop.
Experience diagnosing and repairing Electrical System components in a light-duty automotive repair shop.
Experience diagnosing and repairing Heating and Air-conditioning components in a light-duty automotive repair shop.
Experience diagnosing and repairing Braking Systems in a light-duty automotive repair shop.
Experience diagnosing and repairing Engine Performance issues in a light-duty automotive repair shop.
Experience with providing Customer Service in an automotive environment.

Responsibilities

Perform the most complex repairs and maintenance on a variety of State-owned light-duty vehicles.
Perform complex diagnostic, maintenance, repair, fabrication work, and safety inspections on executive branch light-duty vehicles.
Service, maintain, and repair all types of light-duty vehicles, from standard services to complete overhauls and reassemblies of vehicle components.
Operate highly technical automotive diagnostic service equipment, mechanical repair apparatus, and shop equipment.
Perform related automotive garage duties as required.
Perform highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard automotive and mechanical equipment trade practices and codes.
Diagnose failures in all types of automotive and heavy mobile equipment.
Service, dismantle, overhaul, and reassemble front ends, engines, standard and automatic transmissions, rear ends, hydraulic systems, and automotive electrical systems.
Construct and repair any needed parts.
Weld or braze parts by oxyacetylene torch or electric welding.
Make estimates of time, personnel, and determine and obtain required materials on assigned tasks.
Keep necessary records.
Operate testing equipment required to diagnose automotive electronic components.
Act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts.
Operate heavy equipment.
Respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports.
Complete hazardous materials training programs as required.
