About The Position

An elevator inspector apprentice learns to inspect, maintain, and test elevator systems, focusing on safety and code compliance under experienced supervision. Responsibilities include hands-on training with mechanical and electrical components, reading blueprints, performing inspections, documenting findings, and learning to troubleshoot malfunctions. The apprenticeship combines classroom learning with on-the-job experience to prepare the individual for future certification and advancement.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments (e.g., climbing ladders, confined spaces, elevated areas).
  • Willingness to participate in classroom instruction and on-the-job training.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical or electrical concepts.
  • Technical aptitude: A basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems is beneficial.
  • Problem-solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose issues.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous attention to detail is crucial for thorough inspections and documentation.
  • Physical fitness: Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment, which includes climbing ladders and working in elevator shafts.
  • Classroom and on-the-job training: Willingness to learn through a combination of formal classroom instruction and practical, on-the-job experience

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in mechanical, electrical, construction, or building maintenance work.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols or building codes.
  • Strong interest in vertical transportation systems or technical trades.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with inspections: Help experienced inspectors by observing and testing elevator, escalator, and lift equipment to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and codes.
  • Learn safety protocols: Study and apply safety regulations and building codes related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of vertical transportation systems.
  • Study technical documents: Learn to read and interpret blueprints and other technical specifications to understand the layout and components of systems.
  • Document findings: Assist in preparing written reports of inspection findings, which may include identifying violations and recommending corrective actions.
  • Gain hands-on skills: Receive on-the-job training to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions in various elevator systems.
  • Assist with testing: Participate in testing new, existing, and altered installations to ensure they are safe and meet specifications.
  • Learn about maintenance: Develop skills in performing scheduled maintenance and minor repairs to ensure continued safe and reliable operation.
