QA Engineer

Hyperbound•San Francisco, CA
•$120,000 - $140,000•Onsite

About The Position

Hyperbound is seeking a QA Engineer to join their team and help ensure the rapid and confident release of new features. The role involves independently owning the quality of assigned features and product areas, from test planning and user acceptance testing to building automation and verifying fixes. The QA Engineer will collaborate closely with product, engineering, and Solutions Engineers to identify issues early and enhance testing processes as the company grows. This is a hands-on role that includes investigating issues and building automation, not a manual-testing-only position. The QA Engineer will work alongside the Founding QA Engineer, taking independent ownership while contributing to process improvements and strengthening testing standards.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of software quality engineering experience testing modern web applications or SaaS products.
  • Strong ability to independently design and execute test strategies rather than relying only on predefined test cases.
  • Experience building and maintaining automated test suites using tools such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or similar frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of API testing and experience validating interactions between frontend, backend, and third-party systems.
  • Ability to investigate complex bugs using browser developer tools, logs, API requests, application behavior, and other technical evidence.
  • Experience writing clear, actionable bug reports and communicating quality risks to engineers and product stakeholders.
  • Working understanding of CI/CD pipelines and how automated tests fit into development and release workflows.
  • Strong product judgment: you understand how customers use a product and prioritize testing based on risk and impact.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, releases, and customer issues in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • High ownership and comfort operating with ambiguity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience testing AI or LLM products, where outputs can vary and quality isn’t always a simple pass or fail.
  • Experience working in an early-stage startup or another environment with rapid product releases.

Responsibilities

  • Independently own quality for features and product areas, including writing test plans and running user acceptance testing.
  • Build automation and verify fixes.
  • Partner closely with product, engineering, and Solutions Engineers to catch issues early.
  • Improve how the company tests as it grows.
  • Investigate, reproduce, and clearly document bugs.
  • Build reliable automated tests and determine if failures indicate a product issue or a test problem.
  • Think about how customers actually use the product and prioritize issues based on impact.
  • Take testing from planning through release, helping to drive issues to resolution and verify fixes.
  • Push back clearly when something isn’t ready to ship, explaining risks and helping the team decide on necessary actions before release.
  • Work closely with the Founding QA Engineer, share learnings, and help improve coverage and processes.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to understand upcoming features, identify risks and edge cases, and define coverage levels.
  • Run functional, exploratory, user acceptance, and regression testing across product workflows.
  • Provide clear assessments of release readiness and remaining risks.
  • Dig into unexpected behavior using technical tools like browser developer tools, APIs, and logs to isolate issues and provide actionable findings to engineers.
  • Build and maintain reliable automated tests across critical product workflows.
  • Work with Solutions Engineers to reproduce customer-reported issues, determine scope and impact, and drive fixes through verification.
  • Prevent regressions by adding automated checks, verifying fixes, and expanding coverage.
  • Strengthen testing standards, improve tooling and coverage, and evolve QA's role in the release cycle.
