QA Automation Engineer

About The Position

Cephable is hiring a QA Engineer to ensure its products work reliably for the people who depend on them. The role focuses on turning real user scenarios into dependable automated tests, beginning with hands-on exploratory testing and working backward from users’ needs. A primary focus is on on-device, AI-driven automations that take actions across users’ apps and must produce the right result in the right app across different devices and hardware. The QA Automation Engineer will shape quality practices across Cephable’s desktop and mobile applications, SDKs, and on-device AI. Testing spans Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, as well as Web, .NET, and Unity SDKs. Because on-device AI behavior can differ across hardware, the role includes testing CPU, GPU, and NPU configurations, evaluating accuracy, latency, and resource use, and making variable AI-driven behavior testable through repeatable fixtures and evaluation methods. The role also covers voice and camera inputs when they trigger automations, and testing with assistive technologies and accessibility standards. The position is remote in the United States, with the Boston area preferred. The person will join a small, collaborative engineering team, work directly with the CEO and Director of Engineering, and partner with product, support, users, and engineering. Quality is measured by whether users can rely on Cephable: key workflows should be covered end to end, hardware-specific regressions caught before release, the suite should be focused and trusted, and reported user problems should be reproducible and prevented from recurring.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in QA or test automation, with a track record of building test suites teams trust.
  • Hands-on experience automating both desktop and mobile applications.
  • Strong programming skills for writing and maintaining test automation.
  • Experience running tests in CI/CD pipelines and managing results across many device configurations.
  • A user-first mindset and ability to explain whom a test protects, rather than only which code path it covers.
  • Sound judgment about test value, including when to delete a test, mock a dependency, or require a real-device run.
  • Clear written communication, particularly when translating ambiguous user feedback into precise, reproducible test cases.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience testing on-device inference, especially on NPUs or GPUs, such as Qualcomm, Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, or Apple Silicon hardware.
  • Familiarity with performance and resource profiling, including CPU, GPU, NPU, memory, battery, and thermal behavior.
  • Experience testing AI agents, workflow automation, or LLM-powered features, including evaluation of non-deterministic output.
  • Experience with voice or speech testing.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards such as WCAG and Section 508, and assistive technologies such as screen readers, switch access, and eye-gaze systems.
  • Experience with device farms or cloud device labs such as BrowserStack, Sauce Labs, or AWS Device Farm, or with running an in-house hardware lab.
  • Experience testing SDKs or game-engine integrations such as Unity.

Responsibilities

  • Explore new features and hardware through hands-on testing, then turn findings into automated tests.
  • Work with product, support, and users to capture real usage and create faithful end-to-end tests of user journeys.
  • Build and maintain test automation for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android apps, along with Web, .NET, and Unity SDKs.
  • Design a testing coverage strategy spanning GPU, NPU, and CPU vendors and device manufacturers; catch regressions in accuracy, latency, and resource use.
  • Build repeatable fixtures and evaluation methods for on-device automations and content generation, verifying outcomes in target apps despite variable model output.
  • Use recorded audio and video to test voice and camera inputs when they trigger automations.
  • Retire flaky or low-value tests and prioritize a focused suite that protects user outcomes.
  • Turn test results into clear signals about user impact and partner with engineering to diagnose and fix root causes.
  • Test alongside assistive technologies and against accessibility standards, helping keep users with disabilities central to quality decisions.
  • Reproduce user-reported problems, create tests for them, and help prevent recurrence.

Benefits

  • Meaningful equity grants (options); standard four-year vesting with a one-year cliff.
  • Health insurance, including medical, dental, and vision.
  • 120 hours of time off per year, accrued per pay period.
  • Up to 40 hours of unused time off may carry over year to year.
  • Eight additional hours of time off per year of tenure.
  • 15 paid holidays: 11 federal holidays, the Fridays before Labor Day and Memorial Day, an extra day for July 4th, and the Wednesday before and Friday after Thanksgiving.
