About The Position

Operate heavy construction equipment and/or tractor-trailer. This position can be assigned to any division as needed in Public Works. The role involves 80% field work, including operating tractor-trailer, heavy and light construction, or road maintenance equipment. The incumbent may have some lead worker responsibilities and is expected to perform advanced level of heavy equipment operations. Must be able to perform work without direction or immediate supervision, follow detailed instructions, and communicate effectively verbally through radio. When contact with the public is required, the employee must maintain a courteous, helpful attitude. The position also involves 10% administration, requiring basic computer skills for reporting data, and 10% other duties as assigned, including availability for extraordinary hours during emergency events and assisting with snow and inclement weather operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Two years’ experience operating tractor-trailer and/or heavy equipment operation.
  • Valid Colorado Class A CDL license with tanker endorsement required or ability to obtain license within specified time frame agreed upon hire.
  • Ability to be MSHA certified.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in any two of the following pieces of equipment: tracked hydraulic excavator, snowplow, bulldozer, truck tractor with belly dump, front end loader, lowboy trailer, scraper, aggregate crushing plant, tandem axle truck, tanker, asphalt paver, backhoe (smaller than a John Deere 510), compaction equipment, skid steer, and motor grader.
  • Basic familiarity with and experience working with a variety of road construction, maintenance and repair equipment and materials.
  • Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
  • Ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other PPE as required by County and MSHA.
  • Must have or be able to obtain MSHA (new miner or experienced miner) certification within first 12 months of employment if not certified upon hire.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one situation with the public, subordinates, and supervisors.
  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10’s and 100’s. Perform these operations using units of money, weight, measurement, volume and distance.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and make appropriate day to day decisions without supervisory guidance to perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Pass a background check prior to employment start date.
  • Pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date.
  • Participate in random substance use screening.
  • Pass a physical demands evaluation post offer screen compatible to this position.
  • Regularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally move and/or pull up to 68 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, climb, squat, crawl, stoop, kneel, carry, and reach overhead.
  • Frequently perform the following: sit, reach angularly, wrist flexion/extension, elbow flexion/extension, supination/pronation, and grasp.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
