About The Position

Maintains grounds and buildings for the city by performing various duties related to landscaping, repairs, and general maintenance. This role is considered safety-sensitive and essential, requiring work during inclement weather and natural disaster events. Reporting relationships, work assignments, and schedules may change to meet city needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Two (2) years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or greater.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Mows and trims various city areas including office areas, streets, retention ponds, and large-scale mowing areas.
  • Designs, installs, and repairs irrigation systems.
  • Tests, installs, and removes backflows.
  • Operates and maintains chainsaws.
  • Sows grass seed, plants trees, shrubs, or flowers, and weeds landscaped areas.
  • Plants new lawns and repairs established lawns; trims and edges around walks, flower beds, and walls.
  • Applies herbicide or mulch to designated areas.
  • Sprays lawns, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides.
  • Trims hedges and shrubs; prunes trees and cultivates gardens.
  • Applies supplemental liquid and dry nutrients to lawns and trees.
  • Picks up or carts away paper and rubbish; rakes and bags or burns leaves; cleans grounds and removes litter.
  • Digs trenches and installs drain tiles; keeps storm drains and culverts free of debris.
  • Repairs and paints benches, tables, and guardrails.
  • Assists in the repair of roads, walks, buildings, and mechanical equipment.
  • Makes repairs to concrete and asphalt walks and driveways.
  • Shovels snow from walkways and driveways; spreads salt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup.
  • Repairs fences, gates, walls, and walks; paints fences and outbuildings.
  • Sharpens tools such as mower blades, weed cutters, edging tools, chainsaws, and shears.
  • Makes minor repairs on equipment such as lawn mowers, spreaders, and snow removal equipment.
  • Mows grass, prunes shrubs, trims trees, and plants flowers and shrubs on graves; removes leaves and other debris from parks.
  • Drives vehicles such as backhoes, trucks, and tractors.
  • Repairs and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Keeps city facilities free of debris or graffiti.
  • Removes dead or damaged trees or tree limbs.
  • Responds to city services during inclement weather events as an essential position.
