About The Position

Perform as part of a team to build and maintain roadways and bridges throughout Weld County while operating heavy or light construction equipment. This position can be assigned to any division as needed in Public Works. Field Work - 80% Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of heavy equipment, machinery, trucks, tools in construction and repair activities, and will be required to perform a certain amount of manual labor. Must have basic knowledge of road construction/road maintenance procedures. Must be able to perform work without direction or immediate supervision and follow detailed instruction to aid in the efficient and effective completion of the project or assigned task. Must perform work in a courteous and safe manner. Must be able to effectively communicate verbally through radio. When contact with the public is required, the employee must maintain a courteous, helpful attitude. Must be able to follow instructions from senior employees. Administration - 10% Must have basic computer skills and the ability to report/record data as per departmental requirements. Ability to write, read and comprehend single instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the public. Other Duties as Assigned - 10% Assist with snow desk, emergency operation responsibilities, and work extraordinary hours in such cases, including night-time hours, weekend and/or holidays. Additional overtime duties may be required. Assist Supervisor, foreman, and co-workers with assignments and tasks requiring independent and individual contribution. Requirements

High School Diploma/GED
2 years experience as an equipment operator with working knowledge of tools and light and heavy equipment necessary for maintenance activities used in servicing county roads.
Must have working knowledge of road and bridge construction with demonstrated proficiency in two of the following areas: tracked hydraulic excavator, bulldozer, front end loader, scraper, tandem axle truck, asphalt paver, backhoe (smaller than a John Deere 510), compaction equipment, skid steer, and motor grader.
Demonstrated proficiency in two of the following equipment operation skills: Asphalt Milling Machine, Front End Loader, Tandem Axle Truck, Asphalt Paver, Backhoe (smaller than a John Deere 410), Compaction Equipment, Skid Steer, Distributor.
Must be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
Must effectively present information in one-on-one situation with the public, subordinates, and supervisors.
Add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10’s and 100’s.
Perform these operations using units of money, weight, measurement, volume and distance.
Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and make appropriate day to day decisions without supervisory guidance to perform assigned tasks.
Must be able to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Candidate must pass a background check prior to employment start date.
Candidate must pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date.
Candidate must pass a physical demands evaluation post offer screen compatible to this position.
Valid Colorado Class A CDL license with tanker endorsement required or ability to obtain license within specified time frame agreed upon hire.
Ability to be MSHA certified.
