About The Position

Perform as part of a team to build and maintain roadways and bridges throughout Weld County while operating heavy or light construction equipment. This position can be assigned to any division as needed in Public Works. The role involves 80% fieldwork, performing semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of heavy equipment, machinery, trucks, and tools for construction and repair activities, including manual labor. Basic knowledge of road construction/maintenance procedures is required. Employees must be able to perform work without direct supervision, follow detailed instructions, and communicate verbally via radio. A courteous and helpful attitude is expected when interacting with the public. Approximately 10% of the role involves administrative tasks, including basic computer skills for reporting data and the ability to write, read, and comprehend instructions. Establishing effective working relationships with colleagues and the public is also a key aspect. The remaining 10% is for other duties, which may include assisting with snow removal, emergency operations, working extraordinary hours (nights, weekends, holidays), and supporting supervisors and co-workers with assignments. Time percentages may fluctuate, and not all duties may apply to every position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 years of experience as an equipment operator with working knowledge of tools and light and heavy equipment necessary for maintenance activities used in servicing county roads.
  • Working knowledge of road and bridge construction with demonstrated proficiency in two of the following areas: tracked hydraulic excavator, bulldozer, front end loader, scraper, tandem axle truck, asphalt paver, backhoe (smaller than a John Deere 510), compaction equipment, skid steer, and motor grader.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in two of the following equipment operation skills: Asphalt Milling Machine, Front End Loader, Tandem Axle Truck, Asphalt Paver, Backhoe (smaller than a John Deere 410), Compaction Equipment, Skid Steer, Distributor.
  • Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports and records.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations with the public, subordinates, and supervisors.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10’s and 100’s, using units of money, weight, measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and make appropriate day-to-day decisions without supervisory guidance.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must pass a background check prior to employment start date.
  • Must pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date.
  • Must pass a physical demands evaluation post offer screen compatible to this position.
  • Valid Colorado Class A CDL license with tanker endorsement required or ability to obtain license within specified time frame agreed upon hire.
  • Ability to be MSHA certified.
  • Pre-employment substance screening is required for this position.
  • Regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift, move and/or pull 50 plus pounds up to 92 pounds.
  • Frequently stand, walk, or squat.
  • Occasionally climb, crawl, stoop, kneel, carry, and reach overhead.
  • Regularly perform sitting, reaching angularly, wrist flexion/extension, elbow flexion/extension, supination/pronation, and grasp.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities
