About The Position

Under general supervision, this role involves performing maintenance and construction work on street and drainage-related projects. Responsibilities include litter/debris removal, mowing, and landscape maintenance along road rights-of-way and public property. The work may involve maintaining streets, curbs, and sidewalks, applying tac asphalt, pouring concrete, and assisting in surveying. The employee will operate hand and power tools, prepare concrete, operate a forklift and hand tamper, and clean/maintain equipment. Additional duties may include working in the City’s sign shop, assisting Traffic Operations staff, placing concrete or asphalt, operating motorized equipment, and managing Holiday Flags. The role requires tact and courtesy when dealing with the public and employees, independent judgment, and initiative. Daily work orders must be completed and input into the online system. The employee reports to an assigned Supervisor. For CDL positions, the employee performs specialized skilled work in operating heavy equipment, driving trucks to haul materials, and operating various types of heavy equipment.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in construction work and operation of equipment and/or construction of street and drainage related projects; building, ground, landscaping, irrigation maintenance.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to use hand tools.
  • Must be able to read simple blueprints and schematics.
  • Must possess trade skills in one or more of the following: landscaping, street construction, drainage work, and irrigation systems.
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (for CDL positions).
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record (for CDL positions).

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and construction work on street and drainage-related construction projects.
  • Performs litter/debris removal, mowing, and other landscape maintenance duties along road rights-of-way and other public property.
  • Maintains the City's streets, curbs, and sidewalks.
  • Applies tac asphalt, pours and forms concrete.
  • Performs landscaping duties to protect completed project sites.
  • Assists in surveying by using level and checking established grade lines.
  • Operates hand and power tools in preparing concrete.
  • Operates a forklift and hand tamper.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment utilized.
  • Works in the City’s sign shop and assists the Traffic Operations staff.
  • Places concrete or asphalt.
  • Operates motorized equipment such as mowers, sidewalk grinders, tampers, and rollers.
  • Manages Holiday Flags.
  • Repairs and maintains mains and ditches.
  • Places pipes and fittings into excavated ditches.
  • Digs up roads to install pipes.
  • Maintains irrigation systems.
  • Assists in surveying swales and utilizing surveying equipment.
  • Uses blowers, weed eaters, and edgers.
  • Installs and repairs asphalt, concrete, sod, and rip-rap for construction projects.
  • Installs drainage pipes, catch basins, and manholes.
  • Installs concrete curbing and sidewalks.
  • Performs manual labor functions maintaining and installing roadway and drainage projects.
  • Removes and disposes of obstructions blocking sign views, dead/undesirable trees and shrubbery, and yard waste/debris.
  • Polices public roadways to enhance beauty and safety.
  • Sweeps and cleans sidewalks and roadway surfaces.
  • Removes and disposes of non-permitted signs and other non-approved items from roadways.
  • Applies herbicide, pesticide, and fertilizer.
  • Collects, removes, and disposes of litter/debris.
  • Mows, trims trees and shrubs, de-weeds and edges curb lines, borders, fences, sidewalks, and pavement edges.
  • Trims weeds and grass around poles, signs, fire hydrants, guardrails, irrigation distribution heads, drainage inlets, trees, shrubs, and flower/mulch/rock beds.
  • Performs landscape work, planting trees and shrubs.
  • Maintains flower beds.
  • Fills and levels ditches and excavations.
  • Patches, grades, and repairs roads and driveways.
  • Loads and unloads equipment or materials on trucks.
  • Directs traffic around construction sites and ensures proper signage is displayed.
  • Responds to after-hour calls.
  • Completes special assignments given by the supervisor.
  • Inputs daily information into the online system.
  • Maintains logs and records of maintenance and repair work performed, and supplies and materials requisitioned and consumed.
  • Maintains a sufficient supply of materials and equipment necessary to perform assigned tasks.
  • Assists drivers and pedestrians with route directions when asked.
  • Responds to citizen and staff complaints and concerns.
  • Performs routine maintenance, including daily cleaning of the truck and all equipment.
  • Represents the City at public functions regarding community enhancement programs.
  • Assists Traffic Operations staff with installation and fabrication of traffic signs and pavement markings.
  • Helps with the installation of tube counters and sets up work zones.
  • Helps Traffic Operations staff working on traffic signals by handing tools and supplies, and directing traffic.
  • Drives diesel and non-diesel trucks to haul gravel, dirt, and concrete (CDL positions).
  • Operates various types of heavy equipment such as heavy dump trucks, front-end loaders, and backhoes (CDL positions).
