About The Position

This is responsible work in the operation of a variety of trucks, especially the heavy-duty, more complex vehicles used for construction purposes. Work involves, primarily, the operation and care of tandem trucks or the double-axle vehicles used in street work. Work also may involve the operation and care of a variety of other less complicated vehicles and a variety of semiskilled and general laboring work. Work is performed under the general supervision of a crew leader and is reviewed through observation and daily reports.

Requirements

  • Two years of heavy truck driving experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills.
  • Requires two years’ experience driving heavy trucks or closely related experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned vehicles.
  • Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in vehicle operation.
  • Ability to read maps.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in driving assigned vehicles.
  • Requires a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and tanker endorsement with a good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with hot mix asphalt.
  • Experience loading at an asphalt plant, hauling, and dumping into an asphalt paver.
  • High School graduation or GED equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and care for tandem trucks or the double-axle vehicles used in street work.
  • Operates a variety of other less complicated vehicles.
  • Inspects truck to ensure proper operation and servicing; reports safety violations and repair needs to superior; performs routine maintenance and servicing of assigned vehicle.
  • Hauls construction materials to and from job sites; loads and unloads materials.
  • Conducts a variety of semi-skilled and general laboring tasks related to the work of the crew to which assigned during periods and at intervals when not actually engaged in truck driving or equipment operation.
  • Operates backhoe, loader, tamper, or other types of equipment when required.
  • Maintains safety regulations and work standards in operation of vehicles and equipment.
  • May be required to perform snow removal duties.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
