About The Position

This role combines the duties of a Gardener and a Public Works Maintenance Worker. As a Gardener, responsibilities include pruning trees and shrubs for health and safety, turf maintenance, ball field layout, directing unskilled employees, installing and repairing irrigation systems, and applying pesticides and fertilizers. As a Public Works Maintenance Worker, duties involve installing, testing, repairing, or replacing services, lines, valves, meters, hydrants, and backflow devices. This position requires operating various heavy equipment such as forklifts, tractor loaders, tractor mowers, and brush chippers, as well as trucks with or without trailers. Additionally, it involves using a variety of portable power tools and hand tools, performing landscaping and grounds maintenance (mowing, weeding, pruning, litter pickup), and light janitorial and maintenance duties in city restrooms and buildings. Other related duties may be assigned in both capacities.

Requirements

Prune small trees and shrubs for health, vigor and public safety.
Provide turf maintenance and ball field layout.
Direct the work of unskilled employees.
Install, maintain, and repair irrigation systems.
Apply pesticides and fertilizers.
Install, test, repair, or replace services, lines, valves, meters, hydrants and backflow devices.
Operate forklift, tractor loader, tractor mower, brush chipper, truck with or without trailer.
Use a variety of portable power tools and a variety of hand tools.
Perform landscaping and grounds maintenance including mowing, weeding, pruning trees and shrubs, and picking up litter.
Perform light janitorial and maintenance duties in City restrooms and buildings.
Positive past employment references.
Review of driver history record.
Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older).
Passing a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test.

Nice To Haves

Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
