About The Position

This is a position of nonexempt classification that performs a variety of manual labors in the construction, maintenance and repair of city facilities, streets and storm sewers. This position will also assist the City Forester with boulevard tree trimming as needed.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license.
• Possession of a commercial driver's license (CDL) or ability to obtain a CDL within six (6) months of hire.
• Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment of the road construction and maintenance trades.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices of the trade.
• Ability to perform a variety of assigned maintenance duties.
• Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
• Ability to operate hand and power tools and hand or mowers.
• Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and heavy manual tasks for extended periods when required.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, City employees and the public.

Nice To Haves

• Formal education or practical experience in asphalt maintenance, equipment operation, masonry, carpentry, snow plowing, chainsaws, or chippers.
• Past work experience in asphalt paving.
• Past work experience in tree trimming and maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Perform manual labor tasks on asphalt paving crews, including but not limited to shoveling blacktop, gravel and other patching material.
• Assist department personnel with snow removal utilizing commercial vehicles and pickup trucks.
• Maintain road right-of-way with riding mowers, walk behind mowers and powered weed whips.
• Apply fertilizer or weed killer to medians and road right-of-ways.
• Maintain boulevard trees and roadsides with tree trimming equipment.
• Perform concrete work relating to storm sewer maintenance.
• Perform equipment and building maintenance such as painting, plumbing or carpentry and housekeeping.
• Perform all other necessary duties as apparent or assigned.
