About The Position

Skilled work in the operation of heavy and complex solid waste collection equipment. Work involves the operation of equipment of complex difficulty requiring considerable proficiency, training, and ability. Must use field knowledge in setup, observance of surroundings, and operation of key equipment items. Work is performed under general supervision, and the employee must have the ability to use independent judgment in the completion of assigned duties. Performance is evaluated through observation of results obtained and occasionally while work is in progress.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalency.
  • One (1) year of related work experience is required.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in solid waste collection is required.
  • The nature of the job requires physical strength, coordination, and skills.
  • Outside work under adverse weather conditions is required.
  • Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions.
  • Must hold a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License class “B” with air brake endorsement with a clean driving record.
  • Must pass a background screening process.
  • The employee must successfully pass a background screening process and comply with the City’s Drug-Free Workplace policy.
  • The City will also verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired so the proper completion of Form I-9 is required, which includes the employee providing documents evidencing identity and employment authorization.

Nice To Haves

  • two (2) years is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the geographical makeup of the City limits is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Reports possible health/safety hazards to Superintendents of Solid Waste and/or designee.
  • Performs job duties in compliance with safety rules and standards.
  • Safely operate complex hydraulic solid waste dump trucks, and other related solid waste equipment.
  • Responsible for collecting and loading of garbage and recyclable material along a designated route.
  • Transports and/or ensures that material is taken to the Landfill and returns to ensure the completion of assigned routes.
  • Cross-train as needed or required.
  • Respond to customer inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Perform a variety of skilled tasks using equipment with mechanical controls, requiring proficiency and ability.
  • Safely operates vehicles/equipment according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Complies with Florida Department of Highway Safety Motor Vehicle rules and regulations.
  • Perform daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
  • Prepare maintenance reports indicating deficiencies noted in vehicle operation.
  • Ensures the cleaning of assigned equipment as required.
  • Required to do daily maintenance of equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain proper records as required.
  • May have to perform repair work on equipment that breaks down while in service, if not able to do so, initiates appropriate action to have repaired.
  • May be required to train personnel in the operation and maintenance of equipment/vehicles, facilities, collection routes, and other related duties.
  • Assist other personnel in lifting heavy objects and learning access to properties.
  • Prepares written reports of unusual occurrences on route, report vehicle accidents, property damage, and personal injuries to the Superintendents of Solid Waste and/or designee.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required by the Superintendents of Solid Waste and/or their designee.
