About The Position

Under the general supervision of an Alaska Wildlife Trooper, performs technical level work in the prevention and detection of violations and the enforcement of laws and regulations. In addition, this position performs semi-skilled work, frequently in remote field locations, to ensure that mobile facilities and transportation equipment are operational. The Department of Public Safety strives to preserve the peace, enforce the law, prevent and detect crime, and protect life and property. All positions support or carry out the Department's mission. Requirements

  • Eighteen years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED at the time of employment.
  • Six months of experience performing patrol and surveillance duties and identifying, recording violations, and documenting criminal activity.
  • Six months of field experience involving fish or wildlife management, habitat protection.
  • Six months of experience as a commercial fisher; licensed hunting or registered sport fishing guide; or assistant, deckhand, or similar person who worked directly under the supervision of, and on the same vessel/hunting trip as, a licensed or registered guide.
  • Six months of qualifying military experience that involved working outdoors in inclement weather conditions, and patrolling and surveillance duties.
  • Six months of experience performing semi-skilled duties working in and/or around aircraft.
  • Must have a current, valid Alaska Driver's License at time of employment.
  • Lifting and carrying of loads weighing up to 70 pounds over rough or uneven surfaces.
  • Must submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check.
  • Must read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety.

  • Ability to set up camp independently in a wilderness situation.
  • Experience using hazardous equipment, such as firearms, chain saws, etc.
  • Experience operating boats more than 24 feet in length.
  • Ability to perform vessel and off-road vehicle maintenance.
  • Ability to spend long periods of time in close quarters while at sea on vessels between 29-156 feet in length.

Responsibilities

  • Performs technical level work in the prevention and detection of violations and the enforcement of laws and regulations.
  • Performs semi-skilled work, frequently in remote field locations, to ensure that mobile facilities and transportation equipment are operational.
  • Work and live in remote field sites or on vessels underway for extended periods.
  • Set up camp independently in a wilderness situation.
  • Use hazardous equipment, such as firearms, chain saws, etc.
  • Operate boats more than 24 feet in length.
  • Perform vessel and off-road vehicle maintenance.
  • Spend long periods of time in close quarters while at sea on vessels between 29-156 feet in length.
  • Patrol and surveillance duties.
  • Identify, record violations, and document criminal activity.
  • Perform semi-skilled duties working in and/or around aircraft.
  • General labor and maintenance of aircraft equipment and/or facilities.
  • Cleaning, washing, and/or assisting with fueling aircraft to return to field.
  • Other support tasks related to aircraft.
  • Be available for recall to testify in court during the off season.
