About The Position

The officer supports the Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) mission to provide students, employees, and guests of the university with a safe and secure environment in which to study, work, and enjoy programs offered by the university. This is a non-commissioned, non-peace officer position. Howard Payne University, a church-related institution affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, seeks to employ evangelical Christians who are dedicated to teaching and service as they model the principles of the Christian faith and the University’s sincere religious beliefs. Employees are expected to embrace the Christian Mission Statement and Core Values of the University and must support the University’s affirmation of traditional Christian and Baptist beliefs by leading lives of service through active involvement in Christian activities both on campus and through a local church.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
Ability to effectively read, write and comprehend
Ability to read simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence.
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, guests, and employees of the university
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
Working knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Outlook email software, Microsoft Word, and commonly used Internet browsers
Must maintain a current Texas driver's license
Must be at least 21 years of age to drive any vehicle, including personal vehicles, on behalf of the university
Must be committed to modeling the Christian faith; displays a proven record of modeling the Christian faith in business operations, management roles, customer service functions, and interactions with others; is committed to continuing to model Christian faith in a manner consistent with the University’s mission Statement and core values
Observes University safety and security policies and procedures
Determines appropriate actions beyond guidelines
Reports potentially unsafe conditions
Uses equipment and materials properly
Is consistently at work and on time
Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent
Arrives at meetings and appointments on time
Follows instructions
Responds effectively to his or her supervisor’s direction
Takes responsibility for his or her own actions and keeps commitments
Commits to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals
Completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan

Responsibilities

Provide safety and security services based on proven Christian integrity and ethics consistent with the University Mission Statement
Provide general customer service
Provide general support and emergency response services
Complete daily shift log reports
Maintain constant contact with others via cellular telephone and/or radio
Issue university parking violation warnings and citations
Guard university and personal property against damage, fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry by performing routine patrols, examining doors and gates for security, warning violators of rule infractions, inspecting equipment, watching for irregularities, sounding alarms or calling emergency services, recording data, and responding to calls for service.
Take incident/offense reports and initiate investigations of incidents/offenses
