About The Position

The Public Safety Instructor position is a part-time, school-year role located at the DIISD Technical Education Center in Kingsford, Michigan. The instructor will provide quality instruction in the occupational area of Public Safety to high school students, focusing on technical skills, employability skills, and reinforcing academic skills. The role requires a high level of occupational knowledge, classroom management, communication skills, and a positive attitude towards working with students. The instructor must comply with all Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District Board of Education policies and the current Master Agreement.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 4000 hours of recent, relevant, and successful work experience (within the past 10 years) in the Public Safety field (e.g., Police officer, Sheriff’s Deputy, Firefighter, EMT/Paramedic).
  • Ability to earn and maintain an Annual Career Authorization (ACA) or a valid Michigan Career and Technical Education Certificate in Public Safety CIP 43.0100.
  • Ability to demonstrate field-related techniques (defensive tactics, lifting equipment, etc.).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to perform kneeling, bending, and walking.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Must have regular and reliable attendance.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
  • Driving may be necessary for this position which would require a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a course of instruction based on Michigan Department of Education requirements to achieve and maintain "state approved" status.
  • Ensure students learn relevant technical skills, employability skills, and reinforced academic skills through various activities.
  • Make appropriate adjustments to teaching delivery to accommodate students with special needs.
  • Demonstrate effective classroom management skills to create a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Employ sound pedagogical teaching techniques.
  • Perform program-related demonstrations.
  • Operate program-related equipment and tools.
  • Work effectively with the program advisory committee.
  • Collaborate with administration on improving instruction and handling discipline problems.
  • Exhibit professional conduct and interact positively with students, parents, and the community.
  • Participate in activities to recruit students for the program.
  • Maintain a neat appearance befitting a professional teacher.
  • Enforce all school rules and policies.
  • Work with administration to plan long-range goals for the occupational program, including preparation for entry-level jobs and/or post-secondary education.
  • Abide by all policies and conditions of the Master Agreement.
  • Comply with directives from the building principal/director.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork in a timely fashion (attendance, lesson plans, receipts, reviews, etc.).
  • Serve as a positive role model for DIISD constituents.
  • Adhere to DIISD Code of Ethics.
  • Carry out other associated duties as assigned by administration.
