The Public Safety Communications Specialist receives, assesses, prioritizes, and classifies 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency calls, and dispatches requests to field responders. The position works under the Technical Services Bureau of the Burleson Police Department alongside Police, Fire, and EMS first responders. Applicants must be available to work any schedule because the communications function is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and may require work outside normal business hours. The position is open until filled. Hiring incentives are offered: $3,000 for experienced telecommunicators with at least one year of relevant dispatch experience, paid after successful completion of required department field training; and $1,000 for inexperienced applicants, paid after receiving a state license and successfully completing required department field training. Applicants who pass the CritiCall pre-employment skills testing must submit two packets when asked: a polygraph packet and a personal history statement. Completing the packets in advance is recommended, but applicants are instructed not to submit them until requested. To qualify for a Basic Telecommunications proficiency certificate, the employee must successfully complete on-the-job training, a 40-hour Basic Telecommunications Certification course and a 24-hour Crisis Communication class within one year of hire, 16-hour TCIC/NCIC certification within six months of hire, and TDD/TTY training. Intermediate and Advanced certifications require additional training hours, years of experience, and mandatory courses.
