About The Position

The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) is responsible for ensuring the physical and operational integrity of the regional flood risk management system across East Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard Parishes, protecting against storm surges and flood-related events. SLFPA-E manages extensive infrastructure including levees, floodwalls, floodgates, and pump stations. This Public Information Officer II position is a key communications support role, assisting the Public Information Director with media relations, public messaging, website and social media management, newsletters, outreach, photography, and emergency communications. The role also involves acting as a liaison with police departments and supporting basic IT initiatives. This position is designated as essential personnel, requiring 24/7 availability during emergencies and incidents, and demands clear, professional communication with various stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience in public relations, journalism, marketing, content creation, social media management, or graphic design; OR Six years of full-time experience in any field; OR A bachelor's degree.
  • Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with media partners, members of the public, internal staff, state, and local entities.
  • Must be able to be on-call 24/7 in the event of incidents, accidents, or emergencies, including flooding or storms.
  • Considered essential personnel and required to remain during tropical events.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key communications support role for the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East.
  • Support the Public Information Director in media relations, public messaging, website maintenance, social media coordination, newsletters, outreach, photography, and emergency communications.
  • Act as a liaison with the Orleans Levee District and East Jefferson Levee District Police Departments.
  • Support basic IT-related initiatives as directed.
  • Be available 24/7 during incidents, accidents, storms, flooding, tropical events, and other emergencies.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with media partners, the public, internal staff, and state and local entities.
  • Perform website updates and maintenance, including press releases, marketing materials, and digital assets.
  • Assist in all media relations aspects, including responding to and communicating with media partners and members of the public, as well as federal, state, and local entities.
  • Coordinate and develop content for internal and external agency newsletters and message boards, including photography.
  • Provide support to the Administration for the use of third-party notification systems.
  • Facilitate, maintain, and post agency-approved social media content on the agency's various social media accounts.
  • Participate in outreach efforts and provide tours.
  • Support the Information Technology Department with basic IT initiatives as directed by the Public Information Director.
