About The Position

The Health Department of Jefferson County is seeking a well-qualified Public Health Specialist to support programs and initiatives that improve the health and well-being of the community. This position performs professional public health work involving the planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of programs focused on maternal and child health, chronic disease prevention, injury prevention, emergency preparedness and response, health promotion, and other population health priorities. The Public Health Specialist collaborates with community partners, conducts outreach and health education activities, assists with community health assessments and program evaluations, collects and analyzes data, prepares reports, maintains program records, and supports the implementation of evidence-based public health initiatives.

Requirements

  • Driver's license.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, Health Informatics, Health Administration, Community Health, Public Administration, Social Sciences, Data Analytics, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Experience performing data analysis, program evaluation, or similar quality improvement analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Performs administrative and program support activities by maintaining records, collecting and entering data, reviewing reports, processing documentation, and following established procedures to ensure accurate and current program files.
  • Collects, organizes, and maintains public health information by utilizing electronic databases, recordkeeping systems, and reporting tools in accordance with program requirements to support operational and reporting needs.
  • Communicates with clients, healthcare providers, business owners, community organizations, and other stakeholders by conducting interviews, participating in meetings, and visiting off-site locations to support public health programs and identify community health needs.
  • Assists with program evaluation activities by collecting performance data, reviewing outcomes, and applying evaluation procedures to assess the effectiveness of public health programs and services.
  • Monitors activities at community-based events by observing workflows, reviewing service delivery processes, and applying quality standards to support effective program implementation.
  • Educates community members, healthcare providers, and other audiences regarding chronic diseases, injury prevention, maternal and child health, disease prevention and identification, and emergency response and preparedness by utilizing presentations, educational materials, professional guidelines, and medical literature to increase awareness and promote healthy behaviors.
  • Participates in public health initiatives related to chronic diseases, injury prevention, maternal and child health, disease prevention and identification, and emergency response and preparedness, and other population health priorities by implementing assigned activities and following program guidelines to support community health objectives.
  • Develops, edits, and prepares public health reports by compiling program information, summarizing findings, and following reporting standards to communicate program activities and outcomes.
  • Coordinates community-based educational events by collaborating with community stakeholders, obtaining necessary supplies and resources, and following established program objectives to support public health outreach efforts.
  • Collects and analyzes public health data by utilizing epidemiological information, case reports, health indicators, and established analytical methods to identify trends and support program planning and interventions.
  • Assists with advanced data collection and analysis projects by compiling information, preparing datasets, and applying analytical procedures to support divisional planning and decision-making.
  • Collaborates with governmental agencies, healthcare organizations, community groups, and other partners by exchanging information and coordinating activities to support public health initiatives and services.
  • Monitors health trends and emerging public health issues by reviewing available data sources, professional guidance, and program information to support prevention and intervention efforts.
  • Applies established public health policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines while performing assigned duties to ensure compliance and effective program operations.
  • Participates in professional development activities by attending training sessions, reviewing professional literature, and monitoring updates to public health practices, laws, policies, and guidelines to maintain current knowledge and enhance job performance.
