About The Position

The Human Services Supervisor - Public Health Nursing position will challenge you to develop and apply skills to help ensure a safer and healthier community. Reporting to the Division Manager/Public Health Officer, the Human Services Supervisor - Public Health Nursing, will provide supervision, leadership and coordination to Public Health Nursing staff. Additionally, the Human Services Supervisor - Public Health Nursing will promote family-oriented health services, activities to reduce the incidence and prevalence of communicable, environmental, and chronic diseases through prevention, screening, and education. This position will develop and lead in the implementation of public health strategies that support the Public Health Division. The mission of Outagamie County Public Health is to PREVENT disease and injury, PROMOTE wellness, and PROTECT the health of the community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing and three to five years clinical required.
  • Wisconsin license as a Registered Nurse required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Provide transportation to and from job assignments and maintain driver's eligibility of employment.
  • Ability to operate a variety of medical equipment including anemia, cholesterol, and blood sugar screening equipment, stethoscope, thermometer, scale, etc.
  • Ability to give immunizations.
  • Ability to transport self to and from various locations in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to assign, supervise, and review the work of others in a timely manner.
  • Ability to coordinate functions of division with the Manager.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate decimals and percentages, and make use of the principles of high school algebra.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including referrals, client records, lab reports, policy manuals, medical references, etc.
  • Ability to prepare a variety of documents including performance evaluations, letters, referrals, reports, etc.
  • Ability to use and interpret medical terminology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with subordinates, superiors, physicians, school personnel, home care, public health, government, and other agencies, patients and families, and others verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move objects up to 50 pounds, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.

Nice To Haves

  • Public health nursing experience preferred.
  • Two years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Performs the duties of Health Officer in the absence of the manager.
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates nursing staff activities. This would include evaluating work assignments, oversee staff performance, provide guidance, address personal issues, communicate organizational functions, identify and support professional development needs, and promote cooperative work environment within the Public Health Nursing Unit.
  • Assist the Public Health Manager in interviewing and hiring of new employees.
  • Trains new staff and assures ongoing training of existing staff.
  • Promotes collaborative interdivisional working relationships.
  • Participates in the process of budget planning and monitoring.
  • Performs surveillance and investigation of communicable, acute and chronic disease.
  • Assures quality of community services.
  • Collects, reviews and analyzes community health data. Identifies population groups, families and individuals at high risk of illness, injury, disability or premature death.
  • Provides information and referral services to the general public, medical and human service community.
  • Provides case management and nursing care to individuals, families and communities utilizing the nursing process.
  • Maintain a leadership role in the Public Health Division emergency response for the Public Health Nursing Unit. Complete and maintain applicable training/certificates to support emergency response roles and responsibilities. Maintains emergency preparedness core Public Health competencies by participating in preparedness training exercises and planning events.
  • Provides community screening, health promotion and immunization services in cooperation with the private sector and other public agencies.
  • Collaborates with public and private organizations to assure that community health needs are addressed.
  • Works in partnership with private and public organizations to evaluate the effectiveness, accessibility and quality of the health care system.
  • Informs, educates and empowers people about health issues.
  • Maintains confidential client records.
  • Develops and maintains policies and programs to address public health priorities.
  • Enforces State and Federal laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety.
  • Participates in Divisional Quality Improvement, Performance Management, Strategic Planning, Workforce Development, Community Assessment, Community Health Improvement Planning activities.
  • Coordinates clinical practice experiences for nursing students and resident physicians.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works extra hours as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
