About The Position

Under general supervision, the Public Health Nurse performs education, prevention, and follow-up activities related to immunizations, sexually transmitted diseases (STD), childhood lead poisoning, communicable and food-borne diseases, rabies, and non-public school health. The primary responsibilities of this role will be leading the Immunization Clinic and the Child Lead Poisoning Program. This position starts at $33.29/hr with potential for two pay increases each year.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Nursing
  • Two (2) years of nursing experience
  • Knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of Centers for Disease Control (CDC) STD treatment guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Immunization requirements and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of Records maintenance and retention policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of Community health resources and programs.
  • Knowledge of Disease transmission, prevention methods, and treatment.
  • Knowledge of Phlebotomy practices, methods, and procedures.
  • Skill in interacting tactfully and professionally with County staff, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Skill in administering vaccinations to infants, children and adults.
  • Skill in working efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
  • Skill in following policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Skill in gathering and analyzing data and statistics.
  • Skill in delivering educational presentations and information to large and small groups of varying age and background.
  • Skill in collecting capillary and venous blood samples.
  • Skill in maintaining confidential information.
  • Skill in operating a computer including standard software and some specialized software.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess a license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa
  • A valid Driver's license may be required for some assignments.
  • Must maintain a First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification.
  • Must possess a Mandatory Reporter certificate or obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must possess an STD Clinician certification or obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Healthy Iowa Child Care Nurse Consultant certification may be required for some assignments within (6) months of hire

Responsibilities

  • Provides immunization services to infants, children, and adults; responds to questions from medical providers, school/child care staff, and the public about immunizations; maintains vaccine standing orders.
  • Audits immunization certificates onsite at child care centers, preschools and schools; works with staff and families to comply with Iowa requirements; prepares reports.
  • Provides medical case management for children identified with lead poisoning including education, screening, and referrals for services.
  • Maintains passive electronic communicable disease surveillance system in partnership with schools.
  • Interviews, investigates, documents, and collaborates with local and state partners regarding suspected or confirmed reportable communicable diseases.
  • Provides tuberculosis, hepatitis B, bloodborne pathogens, and hearing conservation employee health services to new and existing Scott County employees.
  • Offers confidential STD/HIV counseling, clinical exams, testing, and treatment; refers clients when necessary to medical providers; assists individuals with implementing behavioral changes to reduce risks of becoming infected and infecting others; documents clinical activities.
  • Provides partner notification for positive STD/HIV/AIDS cases.
  • Provides consultant health services to non-public schools that do not have school health services available; educates school staff on current vaccination recommendations, medication administration, and standard precautions; educates students regarding personal hygiene and puberty; performs health screenings; reviews student health plans and records.
  • Provides child care consulting services to support health and safety in child care centers providing services to school age children in Scott County; conducts onsite health and safety assessments for the Quality Rating System (QRS).
  • Completes rabies risk assessments and referrals for post-exposure prophylaxis; coordinates information sharing with community partners.
  • Conducts formal informal trainings for medical providers, nurses, schools, child care providers, businesses, and other community agencies and organizations regarding disease public health topics.
  • Prepares a variety of program letters, educational materials, reports and statistics; updates program manuals and procedures; prepares materials for public education; answers questions from providers, schools, and the public.
  • Assists in annual grant applications; completes grant requirements regarding reporting and documentation.
  • Orders and maintains an inventory of all program and marketing supplies.
  • Participates in department efforts related to accreditation/reaccreditation, performance management, quality improvement, and workforce development.
  • Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
