About The Position
Join #TeamWake as a Public Health Educator with the Safe Routes to School Program! Help shape a healthier, safer future for Wake County students! The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program empowers children and families to choose walking and biking as fun, active, and safe ways to get to school. Through smart planning, community partnerships, and evidence‑based strategies, SRTS boosts physical activity, reduces injuries, and builds lifelong healthy habits. Housed within Wake County Public Health, the SRTS program plays a critical role in improving community health and preventing motor vehicle injuries involving child pedestrians and bicyclists. By leading thoughtful interventions and collaborating with schools and local partners, you’ll help create safer streets and more active communities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree
- Two years of job-related experience
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted
- Ability to present technical information in a non-technical manner
- Ability to collect data and develop reports
- Ability to be relied upon to ensure that responsibilities are completed in a timely manner
- Ability to accomplish work objectives and to prioritize responsibilities to work efficiently
- Ability to present information to individuals and groups
- Ability to convey information clearly and concisely either verbally or in writing to ensure they understand the information and message
- Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others
- Ability to develop rapport with community and school leaders
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and encourage teamwork
- Regular travel throughout Wake County
- Valid driver’s license

- Experience working with schools systems, PTAs and municipal planners around transportation safety.
Responsibilities
- Assess and track Safe Routes to School activities across Wake County
- Identify and collect data to prioritize schools and guide effective interventions
- Evaluate programs by gathering continuous feedback and using it to drive improvement
- Develop an annual work/action plan aligned with grant requirements
- Research, select, and implement evidence‑based interventions that encourage walking and biking, prevent injuries, and promote physical activity
- Support schools and community partners through hands‑on implementation of SRTS strategies
- Identify opportunities for policy, systems, and environmental changes to strengthen walking and biking initiatives
- Build and maintain strong relationships with school district leaders, individual schools, municipal partners, and community organizations
- Lead collaboration efforts among partners to support impactful, sustainable programming
- Manage funding applications, grant reporting, and action‑plan development
- Track and manage the program budget, including timely invoice submission
- Participate in required meetings, trainings, and professional development activities
