The Nurse Practitioner-Psychiatry and Mental Health [NP-PMH] will work with the Correctional Psychiatric Service [CPS] site Medical Director and Medical and Mental Health CPS Team in the day-to-day care and management of detainees. This shall be within the scope of NP-PMH practice guidelines and in accordance with CPS policies and procedures, OSHA regulations and the ACA/NCCHC standards.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited Nurse Practitioner program with specialty training in psychiatric prescribing.
  • Master's in nursing degree.
  • Maintain a valid DEA number.
  • Maintain current CPR and ACLS certification.
  • One year of clinical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and treat Mental Health Referrals requests and prescribe medications per guidelines set forth by the State Board of Medicine [and/or State Board of Nursing] following the CPS formulary and approval by the NP-PMH primary supervisor.
  • Report and provide care to detainees as mutually agreed upon with the CPS Site Medical Director and Health Service Administrator.
  • Initiate laboratory/diagnostic studies deemed appropriate to manage detainees care when indicated.
  • Follow up abnormal laboratory findings and record this information in the patient's chart. Communicate to the CPS Medical Director for follow-up as deemed necessary.
  • Document detainee encounters in identified format in progress notes, accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Consult CPS Site Medical Director for purpose of sharing information or for additional guidelines in patient management.
  • Inform the CPS Site Medical Director, and Health Unit Supervisor of any significant changes in an inmate's mental status.
  • Act as a resource for crisis intervention and preventive mental maintenance strategies and other patient education endeavors.
  • Assist the Quality Improvement Committee, Medical Director and Health Service Administrator in obtaining or maintaining accreditation at facility.
  • Work with CPS and CPS defense counsel in defending any claims or causes of action against CPS.
  • Provide other professional services as requested by the CPS Site Medical Director.
  • Follow all security rules and regulations.
  • Supervise clinical activities related to the provision of psychiatric services and ancillary medical personnel while on duty.
  • Evaluate all patients referred for presence or absence of mental illness.
  • Treat all patients requiring psychiatric intervention.
  • Review and adjust as necessary all maintenance medications following established protocols.
  • Provide emergency psychiatric care as required.
  • Provide in-service educations for medical and correctional staff as required.
  • Document all services provided in the patient's medical record.
  • On call as assigned.
  • Review suicidal/mental health procedures and conditions.
  • Participate in review of quality of care and conditions.
  • Participate in review of quality of care provided.
  • Work with Mental Health Director and Staff Psychologists and/or other mental health care providers at the facilities.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
