Protection and Controls, R&D

FluidstackAustin, TX
$203,000 - $232,000

About The Position

Fluidstack is focused on delivering 10 to 100s of GWs of compute faster than anyone else, rethinking every layer of the stack. This involves acquiring power, designing and building data centers, and operating them. The company is looking for individuals who care deeply about this problem space and are driven by extreme ownership, velocity, first principles, and a passion for the frontier of AI. This role specifically involves engineering protection and controls for campus power systems, including relaying schemes from generation through distribution. The engineer will own the settings, including coordination studies and relay files, and design the P&C architecture, ensuring integration with communications and SCADA systems. Support for commissioning, including loading settings, testing functions, and root-causing misoperations, is also a key part of the role.

Requirements

  • Protection engineering experience: relay settings and coordination for MV and HV systems.
  • Developed settings for SEL or equivalent platforms hands-on.
  • Commissioned protection schemes in the field.
  • Investigated relay operations and found the truth in the event records.
  • Experience managing settings files as safety-critical code.

Nice To Haves

  • Generator protection.
  • IEC 61850 and communications-assisted schemes.
  • NERC PRC exposure.
  • Arc-flash mitigation schemes.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer protection and controls for campus power: relaying schemes from generation through distribution.
  • Own the settings: coordination studies and relay files developed, verified, and configuration-managed.
  • Design the P&C architecture: relays, communications, and SCADA integration per the reference design.
  • Support commissioning: settings loaded, functions tested, and misoperations root-caused.

Benefits

  • Commitment to pay equity and transparency.
